Seagate has had a stranglehold on Xbox's proprietary storage expansion for the Series X|S up until now, but there's a new competitor in town. Western Digital has announced that they'll also be offering Xbox expansion cards in 512GB and 1TB capacity. Pricing is $79.99 and $149.99, respectively, putting it exactly on par with the Seagate version. These expansion cards are the only way that you can get more install space for current-generation titles on the Xbox Series X|S.

I mean you could but how much are you actually gonna save by buying it that way. Maybe 10-20 bucks and hope that it works. Probably better to just buy the one that is guaranteed to work and save yourself the hassle.

Not really. After paying close to half a grand for a console, more if you want accessories. Then hundreds for subscriptions, not £70 for a game, which are a buggy mess and way over 100GB, now you have to pay hundreds more, only to STILL be short of space.

I literally buy every big game release and I have 600 GB free space. How? I only download what I play. I could download like 4 CODs if I wanted to but it would be pointless.

Yes and no. It uses the CF Express interface, but the chips inside are actually just regular NAND and a PCIe 4.0 controller, just as you’d find on an M.2 stick.

The price gauge on expandable storage for the Xbone is probably one of the reasons why the PS5 is wiping the floor with it. Sony learned from the Vita that if you give the customers easy access to storing games, then there is a higher chance they will buy them.

Buying Xbone games is a last resort because I know I can only fit a couple for the life of the system. On PC, storage is cheap, and I can choose when to move things to SSD based on how much the load times bother me.

LMFAO, Amazon, NewEgg etc have the new WD Black SN850-X @ $139 for 2Tb and 1Tb @ $79.

Meanwhile Samsung 990 Pro are $159 2Tb $99 for 1Tb.
The 980 Pro are at $129 for 2Tb and $66 for 1Tb.

During holidays 2022 i hooked up my Niece with a 2Tb 980 Pro for her Ps5, bought @ $179 plus an ElecGear Ps5 heatsink $30 and a Sabrent Ps5 heatsink $20, regretting big time coz of the ssd new models retailing @ lower prices...until I saw the price of this WD expansion card for X-Bot, lol.

It's a reason but probably far from primary. I hope Sony learned, but I'm shocked that M$ didn't take advantage of the free education.

I think most folk forget that the PS5 while it’s storage is cheaper, it’s tied to the console and can’t be put into another easily/quickly without it being reformatted and tied to that console.

Now I bought the original 1TB on Amazon over a year ago at £179.99 (I payed over 5 month mind) I can see why they are expensive. (Not just due to only seagate having the rights to manufacture at that time but…)

They are hot swappable and do not require reformatting when inserted into another console. (So can take them to my M8s and play my games etc…)

So I would pay a little extra (or in this case £90 more) for the luxury of being able to take my games upstairs without having to drag the console or having to spend double the money to buy 2 NVME drives for both systems because they have to be installed internally and are tied to the system they are installed to. ( < PS5)

Am just glad there are more options now, and the price has come down a bit. More choices are good and should drive the price down when more appear.

Basically we pay higher price for 2 reasons. Seagate having rights for 3 years or so + convenience/simplicity of use.

Maybe I've just had good luck but I've used Seagate, WD, Samsung and never had a hard drive outright fail on me.

heck, I'm still using a 100 gig WD that I got like 10 years ago as extra storage.
