I'm going to buy a launch unit, then a redesigned unit, then if they release a 3rd model I will also buy that.
You really like chucking money at Nintendo, don't you?
I rarely spend money; only buy what I need, so money is not a object for me at this time.

I plan on buying the original launch version. Next i will buy the slightly smaller more likely to break on the hinges version. then i will buy the one that can't play ds games but will have some new gimmick like a 3d video recorder. Finally i will buy the same thing but with 93 percent bigger screens.

That's the spirit. Can you imagine if Nintendo never released improvements / deprovements / refinements / crudements as they went along? The world would be very boring, I say.

I'll wait for the next version.
I actually prefer even the design of the DS Phat over 3DS.
Hopefully they will remove the huge chin off the 3DS later that shit is just unnecessary and ugly.

I stuck with the DS Phat until now from 05. I regretted getting it though when the DSL came out.

I'll be holding out. I didn't get a DSL until 2007 (see my registration date

) as I wasn't really too fussed about getting one, and I'm not too bothered about the 3DS either. There's also the fact that I don't like the current 3DS design. The top half is just nasty. In fact, if I used the word, I'd say that it makes me "cringe" *shudder*.

Under normal circumstances, I would wait it out for the second model of the 3DS. The revisions are usually lighter and more durable than its predecessors. After seeing the flimsiness of the DS Phat at my friend's house, I waited for Nintendo's inevitable update to buy one. And sure enough, when I got my DS Lite, I was smaller, better designed, and less prone to breaking than the comparatively fragile and flimsy DS Phat.

But since the DS days, I think Nintendo has gotten much better at designing their products. They've vastly improved their design choices and techniques. Looking at the DS Phat and the DSi face-to-face, it's a wonder they were designed by the same company! So for this generation, I think I'll put my faith into Nintendo's design skill and go for the original 3DS.

I certainly hope, for the price we've been shown, that all issues with cracking hinges and dead pixels, etc., are lessons learned with the DS Phat and DS Lite and will not be repeated on the 3DS. But I don't know where you got the idea that the DS Lite was the more sturdy between it and the DS Phat. I personally had 3 DS Lite's in a row (white launch model, then warranty replacements) get hinge crack on the right hand side (power switch side). On the other hand the DS Phat passed from my son (11 at the time) to me, then to my 7 year old daughter, and now back to me since she got a red&black DS Lite. It was a red DS Phat MarioKart pack-in special. The original red color is worn away all around the edges and corners and the serial number and all other print is completely worn away from the sticker on the back, but that DS Phat is bulletproof. Much better action (buttons) too. Just wish it had brighter screens.

Why would I want to be sitting around waiting, when I could be playing the 3DS?

I've bought every launch handheld Nintendo's released, never regret it, and gladly upgrade when the time comes. You could always trade your old system in, being humble with the difference in price being a 2 year rental fee, or keep every model to collect like I do. Or you can read through forums about how happy and excited people are with their 3DS, wishing you had one.

I really think it all boils down to money. For those who can afford it, it's easy to buy it at launch, and upgrade when a newer model comes out. For those who are strapped for cash, or rely on birthdays and holidays for new systems, there will be concerns about purchasing decisions.

This, I think the design of the first version of the 3DS is ugly as hell...

The screen are asymetrical and the flip system is so 2004...it need a slider and a keyboard like the cellphone.

What could they really do to the design at this point to improve the 3ds? Make a bigger version? The DSiXL seems like its for older people if you ask me, the screens of the regular DSi is just perfect if you ask me. Make it slimmer? Its already as slim as the Lite. Make it lighter? I care... bigger internal memory? I have a 32gb sdhc card collecting dust doing nothing, I should be fine storage-wise.

I can't figure out what they'd do to improve the 3DS. Its not the same as when the GBA or DS launched. In many many many ways, the 3DS takes what worked with the DS and just improved on it more and more. So its not like we're looking at the first design of a system here, its actually more like a 4th design with many many new and improved features over the past designs (those being the original DS and its predecessors.)

I'll buy any revision of the 3DS that comes out, I love DS

*Let it play MP3 and MP4 /AVC movies like the PSP.
*Give it an industry-standard 16:9 top widescreen instead of 15:9
*USB interface with your PC to allow drag-n-drop audio and video and pictures like the PSP.
*Have a proper image viewer like the PSP that can actually load your own photos on it from real cameras as opposed to only viewing 0.3 megapixel images off its own cameras.
*Do not coat the 3D Slider in silver paint or coat any parts of it silver (tacky and will wear out). Painting plastics silver is horrible.
*Make the 3D Slider far more thumb-friendly (fat with more surface area and usable grooves, not that thin fragile silver-painted stick we see now)
*Make the unit more rounded for easier hand-holding (unit is still far too square). See the original Game Boy Advance for curvaceous inspiration here. Ergonomics is still pretty poor and uncomfortable.
*Give it a dedicated hardware Brightness button as opposed to holding down Select + Volume (DSi).

User interface (assuming it will be anything like the DSi, please change these things)
-----------
*Allow the turning off of music (DSi) when in the menus, without having to turn down the volume as you have to now (DSi).
*DSi Sound: allow you to save your own sounds to SD card and give them virtually unlimited length and increase the quality.
*Calendar Memo feature: why isn't typing allowed on the virtual keyboard? Why is the white box so small for you to scribble in? A promising feature made pointless the way they did it. Allow saving of memos to SD card and syncing with popular apps, too. Make the DS a 'life tool'.
*DSi Sound: allow you forward and reverse through a track on your SD card with the D-Pad's Left and Right (as opposed to moving to the next track like it does now). Unintuitive to anyone that has used an audio device. To only allow touchscreen access to manipulate where you are in the song is extremely unfriendly with all those cool tactile controls there. Take a cue from the PSP here (again). Nintendo aren't the best at usable interfaces.
*DSi Camera: I can't enter Camera or Album with any tactile keys when on that main Camera screen. I can't exit to the DSi Menu with any tactile buttons like B , Select or Start (except the POWER button). I can't move through and select any options with any tactile controls. Make it so I can. Oddly, if I grab my stylus (or use my finger) to go one level deeper inside Album on that screen, everything magically becomes enabled: I can scroll through the pics with my left and right d-pad controls and exit with the B button. Inconsistencies like this abound in the interface.
*DSi Sound: same thing. I'm on the main DSi Sound screen and I can't manipulate any choices with the tactile controls. Yet on the main DSi Menu moments ago I could. When in DSi Sound I can't even exit with B to the main menu again. I can't do anything here with the tactile buttons. Not one of them is enabled. Yet on the next screen a level deeper, my d-pad becomes active (both left and right and up and down) to choose my track. A becomes active to choose. B becomes active to exit - but again can never can exit to the main DSi Menu with buttons (have to press Power button for that). Inconsistencies that again force touchscreen use on some screens and don't force it on others. Silly. Both should be enabled always. There is no reason to make it inconsistent like this.
*I can probably talk about the Settings screens forever, talking about where things can be very much improved here to simplify and make the experience far more pleasant and digestible, but I'll stop now for fear of boring myself to death.
*Give the DS a 'skins' feature so that the creativity of the public can be put to use to make it more pleasant to use. Nintendo's visualisations and basic screen graphics should be able to be changed (again much like PSP).

The main thing to me, though, is making the 3DS more ergonomic and dispensing with silver paint.
The thing can be made far more ergonomic than this boxy design and it would benefit everyone.

There are probably things I am forgetting, but those are my main beefs and I hope that some of those interface things are improved in the 3DS.

I've always bought 2nd iteration of Nintendo portable consoles and I will do the same again.
IMO, the 3d iterations (Micro & DSi) usually have the best design but I don't think I can wait that long.
Beside Nintendo always removes backward-compatibility in the 3rd iteration.

Wahaha, not gonna happen. Ever heard of ChickHEN for PSP?

When did you use it last?
