So I am one of the people eagerly waiting on Gateway for 9.2 and therefore have not updated my 3ds to 9.4. Unfortunately I also did not update my game (Pokemon Alpha Sapphire) and was upset that I couldn't use online functionality. Earlier today I did a hard mod to my 3ds so that i could dump the firmware in case I derped up and somehow updated. I was curious and dumped my 9.2 nand and the updated to 9.4 and downloaded the update for my game. I then restored my 9.2 nand and kept the update because it was stored on the SD card and was able to use online functionality. I'm not sure if this is public knowledge but I figured I would share in case someone else is in the same boat I was.

if you hard mod then it's no problem.

The fact of the matter is that most tempers are all noobs at hardmodding. Thanks for sharing your findings though. :)

Indeed the hard mod is a great thing to have, assuming you have the skills to do it right.

I found it pretty easy to do both the XL and non-XL although that CLK point on the non-XL can be a bitch to do, but doable. :)

That said, I've been soldering for a long time and if this is going to be your first soldering venture I'd probably practice on something else. (directed at anyone looking to do it, not the OP)

But yeah as mastermodr94 said, take your time especially with taking apart and putting the 3ds back together, those ribbon cables can break easily.

The XL is pretty simple if you have some sort of soldering skills though, but still take your time. :)

I have never done a hard mod before (outside of installing an original wiikey) and have thought about hardmodding my New 3DS.
Although it would seem not many people have undergone such a thing, and I would not know where to start.

If you suck at soldering as I do, and have 3DSXL, try the solution with pogo pins/spring probes. I got mine finally delivered from China, so I'll try this during the Christmas week.

I live in Ontario and I have a store you could ship through, and we could do the hard mod for you. No warranty, but we've never broken something soldering before.
