a friend told me that if i did it through console it wouldnt update :/ but based on several other researches they said it does update

You can update, buy/download dlc, ect because Nintendo can't prove the CIA isn't legit. On their end, it just looks like you own the game, thus it's treated as legit.
You will not get banned for doing so.

It should update normally. If not, just delete it through system settings and redownload the game from the e-shop. I once had a legit cia SSB4 that would freeze when I pressed the home button. I just deleted it and redownloaded it though the e-shop, and it was fine.

To the best of my knowledge, u can't download games u installed via non-legit CIA from the eShop. Pretty sure u need the games ticket installed to do that. You can get tickets with homebrew such as freeshop or CIAngel.

If u wanna update a CIA that is the correct region for your console, just enable internet on your home screen, highlight the game, and wait for it to tell you that an update is available. Press A and a menu will open, then press Y to update.

If u are using an out of region CIA, I believe you must also get the updates for that game in CIA form and install them that way.

lol you guys confused him so bad @martinjamesccorpuz you can use the eShop to update any game regardless of it being a "legit" CIA or not and no you will not get banned.
