I know that the OVERLAY and Data folders are involved...but

my question is that....

How can I get the game to have

1. Japanese sounds (that Capcom oh, so kindy cut out of the NA version)
2. english text
3. blood

I got it to where the Menu text was english...yet the game was Japanese...a few buttons were still japanese...but it's a real good sign...

sad part is that I can't see if the Japanese sounds or the blood is in there because when I push NEW GAME for MMZ 1-4..it crashes.

someone told me that you have to hex edit the y9.bin file because the OVERLAY folder is mentioned there

The voice clips were never changed, even in the GBA version to the best of my knowledge. (Ciel still goes "Kyaaaa" and such)
Just no voiced ending song in Z4 and no blood.

I was messing around with the blood thing earlier and it's in the overlays.
Or at least whatever tells it to show blood.
JPN Overlay folder, arm7/9 in USA rom = JPN text + Blood.

but doesn't that cause the ROM to crash upon selecting new game?...

more information (if someone else can help as well):

DATA folder holds sound, fonts, pictures,...

Both versions have sames DATA folder, only files with background pictures differs (Japanese logo vs US logo), means that both version have JAP & US sound.

OVERLAY folder is most likely where we should look in, as I suspect is where all the actual text, and sound "pointers" are located.

the y9.bin list all the files that are in the OVERLAY folder (which is why the game crash when you only swap the overlay folder).

You can try swapping both the y9.bin and overlay_0000.bin from a version to another and you will see that it will change the language of the main menu, but crashes when you try starting a game.

So understanding how the y9.bin works is the key to undubbing the game.

No?
From JPN rom:
-overlay (folder)
-arm7.bin
-arm9.bin
-y7.bin
-y9.bin

Copy over to the USA rom.

But like I said, JPN text.
Not sure if you could add just blood even if you did find which overlay file it was in though.
Also you probably don't even need to move all those files, I just did it all in one go to be sure.

WTF...I replaced the USA

-overlay (folder)
-arm7.bin
-arm9.bin
-y7.bin
-y9.bin

with the japanese

-overlay (folder)
-arm7.bin
-arm9.bin
-y7.bin
-y9.bin

and I got a english ROM with Japanese Text...WTF? o-O

Yes, you get english rom with japanese text and sound.

On my end I've tried some stuff:

overlay_0000.bin could be the main game selection screen. The next four are 0001 to 0004 are the biggest ones which might, and I'm being pessimistic here, hold the text dialogue / blood "settings" AND sound effects. Though I'm not sure, If you switch the entire overlay folder and y9.bin from Jap to US and start Megaman Zero 4, you'll get the scrolling text in english, but have japanese narration.

either way...somewhere along the Overlay..or the .bin files are the Japanese TXT..

we need to find out which files those are and NOT replace those...

easier said than done...

Like I said before...

I got it to where the japanese Game had English Text in the menu..

but it didn't get past New Game

as I said, you cannot swap some overlay files, as it would require modifying the y9.bin

swapping only the overlay_0000.bin works because it is the first file in the list.

I've swapped that file, and modified the first line in y9.bin with an hex editor to make it look like exactly like the first line of the other y9.bin, and the game worked (but I could not start a new game).

so this half assed lol undubing project has caught a snag...

we need someone smart enough to know how to Hex edit the y9.bin then

EDIT - I also replaced the DATA folder as well, and had complete english...

once again...New game = Crash

Having blood and the removed japanese voices in this game would be awesome. I hope someone finds a way to do this since I know nothing about rom hacking. :|

Can this be done the other way to get English text in the Japanese game?

Yes...I got the menu in like 95% english...in the japanese ROM

problem is that..I can't boot MM Zero 1-4....

when I push new game...it crashes....

do it the other way around...and you get a english game with japanese text...

pretty much the Japanese one

Now, did you use a Clean English rom, or the Venom Cracked one?

VERY GOOD OBSERVATION!

I used the Abraham one for the Jap host

and the Venom for the USA Donor

I wonder....

So it seems it won't be THAT hard to accomplish. I'll try unpacking the rom and try doing something myself.

NitroViewer did not work

DS Lazy is what I have used.

I also tried switched the OVERLAY folder from the U to J, the rom crashed, so I also switched the arm7/9.bin

This gives you a japanese game with US text and sound.
Wait, so did it work? :0

I've tried replacing files on clean japanese rom, i've replaced overlay folder, arm7.bin, arm9.bin, y7.bin and y9.bin with the same files from usa clean rom and tried on my DSTWO and it worked, the menu and all texts are in english, i'll continue testing it.

EDIT: There are few things that still in japanese.
