TheFlow announces WIP 'Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas' port for the PS Vita

Sony might have forgotten that it has a gaming handheld called the PS Vita but the homebrew scene hasn't. One of the latest works from the scene comes from TheFlow, who also recently disclosed an exploit on the PS4's firmware 7.55. Via a recent tweet, the modder announced that he managed to port the Android’s version of Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas to the PS Vita by writing a .so (Shared Object) loader and replacing shaders.

TheFlow mentioned that this port wasn't as difficult as it might sound and got the game to run "at a good framerate", although it is still a work-in-progress with "lots to optimize".

Modder Rinnegatamante, who is helping TheFlow with renderer code, released a video of a recent build of the GTA: San Andreas port on the Vita and mentions that the current issues are mostly related to graphics quality and framerate:

Additionally, in the video description, Rinnegatamante clarifies that the whole port was done by TheFlow and that his work "basically makes possible to literally run the official Android apk on PSVita".

As odd as such a hypothetical is, it actually could be argued to be mutually beneficial for both Sony and Nintendo, encouraging PlayStation owners to go buy a Switch if they want a great way to play on the go, and encouraging Nintendo owners to buy a PlayStations if they want to greatly expand the amount of playable content on their own system. Given how well Nintendo and Microsoft work together these days, I really can't dismiss the idea entirely like I would have 5 years ago. Like at this point I wouldn't be surprised at all to see streaming GamePass on the Switch, or Microsoft and Nintendo teaming up to allow remote play of your Xbone/Series X with you Switch.
All kidding aside, I personally favor the competition between these companies; it has done wonders for the evolution of the home console.
One of my concerns with the streaming/remote play 'partnerships' is that it will eventually result in a Trust, which would be detrimental to the gaming enthusiast. In fact, now that Nintendo and Microsoft are 'going steady' (as you mention), a very watchful eye needs to be on these enterprise to ensure they are maintaining a fair and competitive market.

Yeah, its only the greatest handheld ever ma

The fact it had zero inner storage and 100$ bucks memory cards that you NEEDED if you wanted to save the game?

Worse, they didn't need to do stuff that way, they could just have given the console like 2 GB of internal storage and just do a lot of firmware updates. But as they say hindsight is 20/20.

To give you an idea, the most sought out Pokemon games, Pokemon Heart Gold and Soul Silver, are 80$ each without the Poke walker.

This is so amazing, I love to see the support that people are giving to Vita, I hope someone can port it to the Wii U too. I just have a doubt, why did they choose the Android version and not the original PC version?

I always thought that the PC version was weaker due to its inferior textures.

Maybe because the Vita smartphone like hardware makes porting the game easier from the Android version.

Just thought of something why didn’t Rockstar just remaster all the old GTA games with PS5 graphics versus giving us GTA V AGAIN!!

About GTA SA this is good but a game like this you can only play once it’s too long lol last time I played this game was in 2004 (story is better than GTA V) the triple character thing wasn’t my cup of tea

I guess reducing the texture size and object complexity is going to be his only practical option, unless he's made some simple mistake in his porting layer or they put some dumb code in that is slowing the game down that can just be nop'd out.

You can edit the graphical options and draw distance in game anyway. There was an issue with the 2.00 update that nerfed FPS/lag for a lot of people;

And aside from that unless you've got something with great specs (Shield TV for full experience) getting it running perfectly is a bit hit and miss so it seems the port isn't really that upto spec in the first place which adds variables when it comes to this wrapper for the Vita as it isn't exactly a powerhouse.

That said at least its a uniform platform so can be optimized for. Personally I'd be happy with the graphics dialed back to the PS2 level because I can do without shiny floors as long as the FPS was smooth and constant with great responsiveness.

Either way its an impressive task and he's made great progress already on top of singlehandedly keeping the Vita scene alive numerous times so its all good either way.

I wonder if someone found how to jailbreak a Playstation 1 without a chip? Like, by loading some data in the memory cards or something?

yall im torn... ive been hacking away at tales of phantasia GBA (the USA version) and have so many documents of reverse engineering i've done
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
I just found out that the EU version is better in literally every way, better sound quality, better lighting, and there's even a patch someone made to make the text look nicer
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
Do I restart now using what i've learned on the EU version since it's a better overall experience? or do I continue with the US version since that is what ive been using, and if someone decides to play my hack, it would most likely be that version?
  • Sicklyboy @ Sicklyboy:
@TwoSpikedHands, I'll preface this with the fact that I know nothing about the game, but, I think it depends on what your goals are. Are you trying to make a definitive version of the game? You may want to refocus your efforts on the EU version then. Or, are you trying to make a better US version? In which case, the only way to make a better US version is to keep on plugging away at that one ;)
  • Sicklyboy @ Sicklyboy:
I'm not familiar with the technicalities of the differences between the two versions, but I'm wondering if at least some of those differences are things that you could port over to the US version in your patch without having to include copyrighted assets from the EU version
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
@Sicklyboy I am wanting to fully change the game and bend it to my will lol. I would like to eventually have the ability to add more characters, enemies, even have a completely different story if i wanted. I already have the ability to change the tilemaps in the US version, so I can basically make my own map and warp to it in game - so I'm pretty far into it!
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
I really would like to make a hack that I would enjoy playing, and maybe other people would too. swapping to the EU version would also mean my US friends could not legally play it
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
I am definitely considering porting over some of the EU features without using the actual ROM itself, tbh that would probably be the best way to go about it... but i'm sad that the voice acting is so.... not good on the US version. May not be a way around that though
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
    I appreciate the insight!
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
@TwoSpikedHands just switch, all the knowledge you learned still applies and most of the code and assets should be the same anyway
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
    and realistically they wouldn't

be able to play it legally anyway since they need a ROM and they probably don't have the means to dump it themselves

  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
@Karma177 that sd card is 100% faulty so yes, its a bad idea
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
even the slowest non-sdhc sd cards are a few MB/s
  • Karma177 @ Karma177:
@The Real Jdbye it hasn't given me any error trying to write things on it so I don't really think it's faulty (pasted 40/50gb+ folders and no write errors)
