I'm so excited for the Pandora. But yes, installing XP doesn't make a whole lot of sense. It makes the eeePC quite a bit more expensive and takes up at least half, if not all of your SSD.

Not if you have an extra copy of XP sitting around, and then NLITE it (remove all the crap from it). Got my XP install to only 300MB (of course, with compression, no page file, and no system restore)

BTW I got a 4GB Black 700 with XP Pro on it with 2GB of RAM and a 4GB SDHC card.


I am thinking about the 20GB EEEPC 900 when it comes out. (16GB version has XP on it, which the 20GB version has linux)

Or you can learn to use nlite and do it yourself. That way you can keep the components you want and disable those that you don't need.

My install was 400MB smaller than his and I didn't lose anything I needed.

How easy or desirable is it to throw another distro on it, say like Ubuntu.. pros, cons? I kinda want to dedicate a machine to fuxxing around with linux.. would the eee be a good candidate for that sort of thing?

If you have an external DVD drive... the eeePC takes 10 minutes from the DVD to go back to factory settings. The only problem would be, is that default Ubuntu isn't made for such a low resolution... but people have made an eee version of ubuntu and other linuxes which all have forums at forum.eeeuser.com.

However Ubuntu does still run fine... just a bit more cramped. Overall it is a pretty good test machine.

You don't need the DVD to restore factory settings ... that disc is an emergency measure ... the factory settings are all stashed away in the machine ...

Just hit F9 during boot up, and select the options to restore system ...

I thought you needed to delete all of the partitions if you wanted to install another OS?
