Tesla - The Nintendo Switch Overlay Menu

fhwyjbd.png

Hey all.
I'd like to introduce to you, Tesla: My answer to the growing need for proper ingame front ends for sysmodules.

What is this?

  • Tesla consists of three individual parts. nx-ovlloader, the Tesla menu and libtesla.
    • nx-ovlloader is basically nx-hbloader ported to run as a sysmodule. It runs in the background and loads overlay NROs (.ovl files) given to it.
    • Tesla Menu is the equivalent to the hbmenu. It's the initial thing loaded by nx-ovlloader and acts as a hub for you to select all other overlays.
    • libtesla is where it becomes interesting for developers. It's an easy to use library that handles layer creation, UI drawing and all the overlay UX. It makes it very easy to create a new overlay for anything
  • A frontend for sysmodules that before required either a homebrew or a config file to change settings or used sounds or the LED to give the user feedback.

What is this not?

  • A tool that lets you create overlays that are always visible. Overlays can get unloaded way to easily for this.
  • An excuse to port absolutely everything to a overlay. Nobody's going to need a title manager overlay. If you consider making a overlay, keep it simple. You don't have a whole lot of memory to work with.

How do I use this?

First of all, download the latest release of nx-ovlloader and the Tesla Menu from the GitHub Release page and extract it onto your SD card.
After a reboot, hold down L and DPad Down and push on the right joy stick to bring up Tesla at any time. Navigation works as you imagine it.
Similar to normal homebrews, you place your .ovl files in the /switch/.overlays folder on your SD card.

Notice

Make sure to use the latest Atmosphere release when trying this as older versions ( as the one SX OS uses too ) probably won't have enough memory available for this to run. Overlays do take a lot of space so nx-ovlloader reserves 6MB. 2MB for framebuffers and around 4MB for overlay developers to use in their overlays.

im sorry just want to confirm that latest nx_ovlloader is 1.0.7 and the tesla menu is 1.2.2 as mentioned. You asked him to update his ovlmenu and edizonoverlay from the attachment from the given link but the link contains the teslaoverlay is 1.2.0 and the nx_ovlloader is 1.0.5 and 1.0.6 which i presume are earlier version. So which is the correct one now ?
both will work, those 2 haven't been officially updated on github like until 2 days ago

I can play around with the overlay but once I enable to system monitor overlay I cannot use the bottons to get back into the overlay until I reboot. Any advice?

Press both joysticks in to close system monitor iirc

That works! If you launch system monitor in full it tells you that but I happened to launch mini version at first. Thank you

Another question: What is module "00FF0000636C6BFF"? It was enabled by default. Should I disable?

hello all, i installed latest updates for all but i cant pull the tesla menu up (im nto sure im using the correct combination). L+R+LJoystick+Rjoystick. also. I have edizon installed and i cant play super mario deluxe, when i start it it has all cheats activated, i go to album icon, and disable all cheats, and still some of them are still active in game and sometimes game crashes.

did you try to press home first? I find recently (playing ToTK and Metroid Prime) that the key combo won't work in-game, when the game already makes use of all of those buttons at once...

edit: also, that combo doesn't sound correct. It's L+D-DOWN+R-stick button, unless you changed the combo on your own.

Um. Ok... I literally quoted you mentioning "...hotkey tesla menu, it wouldn't open at all"... that would be the combo :rofl2:

Anyway, glad you got it sorted.

This is not the right thread to talk on our opinions about Pokemon. I will say I have mixed feelings about Sword/Shield but there were parts of it I really liked and I overall enjoyed it. Just wish there was more of it, and the DLC just feels like content they cut from the game to release it as DLC later, because the games are so short. They're definitely not bad games, they're just not anywhere near as good as they could (some would say should) be. It's kind of to be expected from Game Freak though. Still disappointing of course, but not surprising at all.

Thirded. That would definitely be a better use for the long press power, and anything the quick settings menu does already could be added to Tesla.
It would be nice to have some extra settings too, such as wifi settings and airplane mode easily accessible from within Tesla. And maybe an easy way to sync JoyCons would be nice so you don't have to go to "(JoyCon icon)->change grip/order" in the home menu every time. Maybe there is an easier way and I'm just dumb.
wonder if anybody ever did anything like this
