Tencent shows off mock-up of its cloud gaming controller with interchangeable parts

Tencent has just wrapped up its annual conference, where it showed off a handful of new games heading to the mobile platform. Some of these reveals included Metal Slug Mobile, CrossFire HD, and Digimon: New Century. The most important announcement wasn't the set of games, but rather, the input device used to play said titles. Tencent has unveiled its new cloud gaming controller, revealing a mock-up of the concept, which features a gamepad that has a swappable face, letting you seamlessly switch between different types of layouts. One of the styles shown is a traditional, modern ABXY design with two flat circle pads, along with a round, X-shaped "d-pad", while the second option has a much more complex layout involving five circle pads, mimicking a type of layout frequently seen in mobiles games such as Diablo Immortal, Genshin Impact, or Tencent's own Honor of Kings. The controller will be a major part of the company's cloud gaming service, which will not only stream console games to players, but also mobile phone games. Since the gamepad will have modular parts, it helps it cater to both sides of the market in Tencent's homeland of China, which happens to have a major focus on mobile game experiences.

That second layout, with a bunch of buttons of different shapes and sizes... it's like "Imagine the GameCube controller, but more so."
Almost seems like someone at tencent really likes the c-stick - and decided to throw 5 of em on there

I have no concerns generally about "Chinese" companies spying anymore than what Apple, Microsoft, Samsung etc already do ... except when it comes to Tencent ... I have absolutely no trust in them what so ever and if they were a person I wouldn't piss on them if they were on fire infact I would probably throw another flammable liquid on to keep it going

A few companies had this "modular controller" idea, but somehow they only release the initial two or three configurations (or in the case of Nintendo just one) and that's it. Let's see how far Tencent gets. It is kinda weird, that they don't show any config with normal analog sticks, since most people prefer them to circle pads. Though I get the idea of this "non-traditional layout". Some mobile games have skills on buttons you have to drag. That's a pretty smart conversion.

I have no issues with Tencent, heck, my phone has Tencent stapled on the back.

Pretty curious about that Digimon game, I had never heard of it before but it seems pretty cool.

Fucking lol. This looks like that one retarded idea that should have been scrapped seconds after being thought of.

Plus, it's Tencent, so the malware and privacy invasion comes as a bonus free package.
Sounds like Google, Facebook and apple are saints thus never collected your data, nor produced any ugly gaming devices LMFAO

ok but why is it cloud gaming
none of the big tech companies ever thought of joining the gaming industry until cloud gaming became a thing
now they all want to get in on it

i thought everybody knew cocktails are like 75% ice
  • Veho @ Veho:
    Yeah but not like this.
  • Veho @ Veho:
It's not like they're complaining that their Slurpee is 99% ice or something, but if the cocktail calls for "shot of vodka, shot of vermouth, shot of gin, shot of Campari, three shots of juice, squirt of lemon" and ends up being a thimbleful of booze, that's a problem.
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
the funny thing is cocktails in norway are only allowed to have 1 20ml shot of booze
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
    so..... yeah
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
we're used to only having a thimbleful of booze

    Booo.
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
same thing if you want whisky on the rocks or something, you can't get a double
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
but you could buy as many shots of whisky (or anything else) as you want and ask for a glass of ice and pour them in
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
    it's dumb
  • Veho @ Veho:
    Maybe.

There was a comparison of the number of Ibuprofen poisonings before and after they limited the maximum dosage per box or per pill (i'll look that up). No limit on the number of boxes you can still buy as many as you want, so people argued it was pointless.
  • Veho @ Veho:
But the number of (accidental) poisonings dropped because drinking an entire package of ibuprofen pills went from "I need a new liver" to "I need a new box of Ibuprofen".
  • Veho @ Veho:
Here we have ketoprofen that used to be prescription-only because of the risk of toxic dosages, but then they halved the dose per pill and sell them in bottles of six pills apiece instead of twenty and it doesn't need a prescription any more. Yes you can buy more than one bottle but people simply don't.
