As for the update with choidujour... Yes, 5.1.0 should enable them to play way more games. AutoRCM will also protect them from starting OFW and sending telemetry to Nintendo.
I personaly don't see a reason to go for SXOS as you get all games as NSP's and XCI's don't offer any advantages there, but thats a just me.
Just make sure to make a NAND backup, so they/you can restore it if anything goes wrong.
If possible, tell them to say offline to make extra sure they don't mess something up
im going sx because 1) i have two pros already and i like and am comfortable with it, 2) the dongle makes it so easy to boot after a crash esp with autorcm and 3) hes more likely to evade a ban with xcis. I will let him decide if he wants to install nsps or use homebrew and risk a ban. sx's virtual nand may also be a good option so he can keep a clean sysnand at 4.1, assuming it works well. i dont know the concensus on that.
I plan to type up a tutorial for him and include it in the gift box so he knows everything, including info about online, nsps, homebrew, updating, getting new content, dangers, etc.

I think its not patched. The stock FW should be 1.0. XAJ70042X and below are safe to buy. XAJ700002 - XAJ700065=1.0

No risk of a ban at all for now, since it's a patched unit and you can't hack it. Feel free to do whatever you want with it. (I would return it, personally, and try to get an unpatched Switch)
That's what I was curious about, if I buy just the tablet of a hackable switch the joycons would work? Antonline doesn't have a friendly return policy so either I try selling it on ebay (at a loss because of shipping and ebay's fees) OR as you suggested buy just the tablet if it's indeed possible.

I would say its probably safe since XAW4000 is lower than XAW4001....But I can , without a doubt be wrong.

Don’t know, there is little information about the XAJ1 line. I’d give it a 60% chance to be unpatched. This is speculation, of course.
Why didn't you buy the first one you posted here? That would have been 100% unpatched and had FW 1.0.0, so added bonus when cold booting is released.
