The official webpage for Marvelous Games' Rune Factory: Guardians of Azuma has this passage:

What is the physical "Nintendo Switch 2 Edition"?

The Nintendo Switch 2 Edition is a red 64GB game card that includes, in full, the Nintendo Switch game and the Upgrade Pack.

There’s no need to download the full game: simply insert the card into either a Nintendo Switch or Nintendo Switch 2 console, and the correct version will launch automatically.

Assuming this was not some kind of typo, this seems to be new information since the switch 2 game cards are listed as only compatible with the switch 2 on Nintendo's website. So it would seem that either all switch 2 game cards could be read from switch 1, or there is a subset of game cards specifically designed to be read by both.

It must be a mistake. Is the Switch even capable of reading a 64GB cartridge?
Yes Switch cartridges went up to 64GB. However even if the system could read the card it wouldnt be able to do anything due to them all using different decryption keys. Also the cartridges are confirmed to have a small notch.

So if this was true it would be even more dumb as it would allow modded Switches to access Switch 2 games. It must be a mistake.

I'm sure someone would still start dumping all the carts for when/if decryption becomes possible. That's what happened with the PS5.
We already do have confirmation that the back of the cart is slightly different so they won't fit in the Switch 1 cartridge slot without breaking the cart a bit.

From what I've seen, the modification of the Switch 2 cartridge is just a small notch that shouldn't physically block insertion in the Switch 1 readers, but rather just serve to toggle some physical switch in the Switch 2 reader to tell the console which kind of game is inserted.

What's your source for this? I'm struggling to find anything bigger than 32GB.
Yes 32 GB carts are the standard for most games. Those that require extra data would download it from NUS.

I've got a Mario Kart 8 Deluxe including most expansion packs but one (the last one), so the first time I insterted it on my Switch Lite it downloaded the extra data (I'm using a 128 GB external SD card for my games).

So, I'm assuming 64 GB carts for the Switch 2 will allow to include that extra data on them without the requirement for getting it from NUS, unless there's a game with more than 64 GB of data which being Nintendo, its a gamble to say yes or no.

Not like we don't have 2TB in our Vita game card slots... I can't view the article. But if it's not a typo, maybe it's actually a Switch 1 game? Or maybe there's some transitional format with limited backwards compatibility, like Super Gameboy games.

"Thank you for purchasing this $90 Mario game! In order to play it, please purchase a digital upgrade voucher for your console for only $449.99.99!"

I thought Switch 2 carts were simply just made red. (If thats what I remember correctly from the direct.)

If I'm wrong, then welcome back 3DS cartridges, lol
This was on the Japanese website they look almost identical it's just the back of the cartridge has a slightly different shape.

I read this so many times nkw, can you show me where it was actually confirmed?
It's from a screenshot of the switch 2 tech demo that everyone shits on because they're charging for it:

It'll allow the switch 2 to physically detect which generation card is inserted, but it won't prevent switch 2 cards from being inserted into switch 1 consoles.

Yeah it appears this is the standard but there are some games such as Rune Factory that have both versions on 1 cart
