Yup, as you've found Swordcraft Story 1 and 2's scripts are compressed, but the menu is not.
Luckily it looks to be the same as in this game. So just a few random points:

If you just want a script dump, it's not too bad.
If you want to get the text back in the game, it's a bit more trouble.

Do you have any coding experience? Just some very basic stuff is required.
Otherwise, I don't see how you're going to get the text back in.

[Edit: fixed links, but you probably want to view with a fixed width font]

Some reading material about the compression:
https://docs.google.com/document/edit?id=1c...uthkey=CJW_9a8F

Example from Swordcraft 2 after decompression:
https://docs.google.com/document/edit?id=1m...uthkey=CJ2ng-UN

Annotated example from Summon Night CSM3:
https://docs.google.com/document/edit?id=1t...uthkey=CPW0jrQG
Thanks for your reply!

Sorry, I don't have any coding experience. I've only used game-specific tools and hex editors.

The main purpose is translating the game, yeah, but also I'd like to handle dumping and reinsertion.

If you don't mind, would you be interested in a collaboration? If it's not so difficult, you'd dump the script and reinsert it when it's translated. I'm in charge of the translation and font editing.

Sorry TheFireRed, I don't think I really have enough time to help out much.
It would also be too annoying to iterate back and forth trying to make everything fit in the space provided.

What I really should do is write a small tool so everyone can help edit the scripts.
I've been meaning to do that anyway.

I'll get you the script dump if you like too.
Summon Night Swordcraft Story 1 or 2?

Thanks!! Swordcraft Story 1

It's okay if you haven't enough time to help me.

Thanks again!

Okay, here is the script from what I believe is the start of the game,
sncsm1-0064142c.

http://www.sendspace.com/file/0m592a

The full dump is about 1000 files, which should include everything from
dialogue to character interactions.

You *should* be able to start extracting strings and translating. If
you can send me the character codes for this game (in particular the
punctuation marks), I can let it scan through and output English
strings fairly easily which should ease things. Also, if you've
created new characters, those codes would be useful for insertion too.

If you haven't done so, read the document about compression. Just
have a basic idea so that you can make good use of the available
space. Basically the script is everything on the right of the colon
pasted together. It is either a single byte, or a string of 3 to 18
bytes taken from earlier in the same script.

Take note of the offsets where the strings begin so you can make
replacements once I get the text insertion tool going. Also, take
note of where the dialogue branches for Cleru/Pratty.

This is probably the final release from me: sncsm3v6.zip

http://www.sendspace.com/file/womjdx

v6 translates the first third of the prologue dialogue. It should
work for both male and female leads, though they say mostly the same
things.

From here the dialogue branches depending on your chosen guardian
beast. It shouldn't be any more difficult, I just don't have the
appropriate text to continue.

Thanks for your help, but I'm not sure what do I have to do right now. I've read the Dialogue Encoding document, but it's a bit hard for me.

By character codes you mean a character table? http://pastebin.com/raw.php?i=Lx9pz7Js

Again, thanks for your patience and help.

That's right, but the character table you've provided is missing
things like comma, fullstop, ?, ..., and probably many more.

Also, if you've created some new letters with accents or whatever,
please provide their codes too.

Apart from that, there's nothing for you to do just yet.

Okay, I'll complete it.

I'm having some trouble adding new letters. I've tried Tile Layer Pro and FaTILEty, but tiles are a bit messed up. I've tried to modify a japanese character (e.g., after "z" = 829A, there's one (must be 829B), so I modified it as an "á". But in the game doesn't show at all.

Assuming everything is the same as CSM3:

The character after 'z' probably has code 0x829f.

Each letter is 6x12, stored as 1 byte per row. It is literally just a
bit-map: 1 if the pixel is black, 0 if it is transparent.

Hope that helps.

For interested parties, here is the script dump from Summon Night Craft Sword Monogatari 3.
I think all the text is correct, but let me know if something seems weird.
There are a few missing characters: 83c4, 83c5, 83c6, 83c7.

http://www.sendspace.com/file/y695oo

The introductory dialogue begins at sncsm3-017bcb2c, and subsequent scenes appear in sequence.
I've done up to sncsm3-017bff6c (inclusive), though most of Rif's text was just copied from Ritchie.
Other files:

teleporter: sncsm3-01721b4c
fishing minigame: sncsm3-0172234c
wood chucking minigame: sncsm3-017224ac (not yet done)

Im guessing this topic is dead.... No more english translations / patches to look forward to. This would have been a great game though, if it was readable.

This post might sound late, but I'm interested in looking for a way to make swordcraft 2 get undubbed. As some of us know that the dubbed version of eng is not that great.. SO Im wondering is it possible to change the sound files from each of the games? If not how about the text itself? How hard or easy this can be?
Or any possible good tools to use for this?
Im thinking to use the gba_audioripper by atrius, and Im trying to see if dragging both of the roms work... but It seems that the new output goes into the end of the file place instead of replacing the original thing how can I change this?... hmm not sure how this works D=

EDIT: I also tried sappy, but can it detect voice files? I can so far replace or change the bgm, but I can't seem to find the voices...

....No offence but... Why, just why would you waste time doing this?!

First of all - barely any of the SN games have even got localized.. And for the few that do, you want to try and take out english voices?! :/

Secondly - it's a GBA game lol, I doubt there are THAT many voices - just a few grunts here and there, and "Yay, I won" at the end of a battle.

I mean if you want to do it to practise your skills, then fair enough
smile.gif
but personally I just don't see the point.

As much as I agree with you, I really can't imagine anyone ever continuing or finishing this translation...

...It's a shame because I reaaally enjoyed the first 2 games- it's quite refreshing to play a fun and easy RPG which doesn't take itself too seriously.

If you want more SN games, the best thing to do is just wait for the Summon Night X translation to be finished (I hear a group will be working on it again soon)
