hmmm. i used to have that software years ago, and when i got rid of it and replaced it with another it found 2 viruses that MSE didn't find. maybe the software has improved since then (this was like 6 years ago lol). i guess i could test myself aswell. :\

I don't think Microsoft security essentials has been released for 2 years yet. You must be thinking of Windows Defender?

oops i meant to say Windows Live OneCare. hahah silly me
Security Essentials is a lot better than OneCare, that's for sure.

I'd definitely say it's the best free anti-virus system out there. It's light on memory, and at the same time stays pretty much out of sight until it finds a virus (no annoying pop-ups!)

You're much better off with Nod32, or if you want something free, Avast! perhaps.

edit: I stand corrected, MSE does have a robust herustic engine.

First rule of anti viruses, is none are perfect.

Not as vital as putting on a condom maybe, but pretending one anti virus solution is ever perfect is like assuming you can use 1 condom indefinitely.

The only Free Anti-Virus, with great Heuristic and DB Engine, Monitoring http and FTP Traffic, is Avast. For even more Security I use ThreatFire with it.

MSE is bullshit, never get high rankings in independent Tests.

Free Kaspersky with a Barclays bank account is a win. Only good for UK though.

If you don't mind editing a key in the Reg every month you can keep Kaspesky on trial forever. Tis good as you don't need any dodgy re-set or hack programs which I never trust.

what i hate about the newer anti virus programms is, they slow down everything thats not on an up to date hardware.

i mean, ffs, i cant run avira on any of my older xp systems and its even slowing down my laptop (startup takes about 20 seconds longer)

im using avg at the moment, which starts up faster. but even they changed versions recently and seemed to bloat up a lot. got like half of the features disabled to get it to stop

I was using Norton Anti-virus for the longest time, thinking it was doing it's job because I was never detecting viruses during regular scans, but then one day I actually got a virus that started fucking with my Google search results, a false page that'd occasionally produce spam links instead of real links.

I came to GBAtemp asking for help, I've since ditch Norton in favour of Avast and Malware Bytes, much MUCH better software that immediately detected viruses that Norton was oblivious to.
Although after a false-positive fiasco that flagged a lot of my software as infected, I've switched to MSE.

Point is never use Norton, ever. Three big offenses are that its virus scan actually doesn't pick up shit, it slows the system down to hell, and worst of you, you have to PAY for that.
Why do you think they give Norton away free with computer systems? It's the only way they can move their shit, onto unsuspecting customers!

That's the thing, I hadn't done anything that I would recall getting the virus at all, one day I just suddenly had it.
In other words Norton's real-time security failed me terribly.

while it may be old, it is still relevant and all of the programs mentioned are still alive

also, my dad gets free Norton from work, and he makes me use it so... yeah kinda sucks
