Not 'today' but the other day I finished Nine Sols. What a game! The combat went from something that was too frustrating to handle, to addictive and something I now miss playing other metroidvanias.

Last boss had me over a barrel though :wtf:

Having partially lost my IRL v8 until I rebuild and the arduous journey to even get her back home, I finally tapped 2015 Mad Max: repetitive AF, yes; enjoyable, very; boss fights being nice albeit feeding into the overall combat repetition, yeaaa. 5/5 play this thing!

Yep that is a good game.

I first finished on my hacked ps4 and like it so much i actually bought it (on sale, digital) for the Xbox and i'm half way through it again.

Such a underrated game. Sad we will never see a sequel to it.

Enough procrastinating, today I finally took the time to get my Analogue 3D and Summercart64 sorted. I had been playing with it pretty much on default settings, which were locked at 1080p and I couldn't figure out why, and except for updating firmwares I hadn't done anything yet about minor tweaks. I now have the all cart images in the Analogue 3D menu and all the boxart images in the Summercart menu. That includes a cart image that matches my Kaico SC64, even though it still shows as "Unknown Cartridge." I also set the RTC on the Summercart (for some reason it thought it was still in 2024), and on the Analogue 3D I figured out how to get it to play nice with my older 55" Sony Bravia so it now displays integer at fullscreen, i.e. no black space top/bottom, in 4k on any setting. (needed to enable "Enhanced HDMI" for the specific input channel the A3D is plugged into, or else it would force 1080p only. Just a quirk with my old TV, not the A3D.).

It all looks glorious now.

Then I proceeded to get 14 stars in SM64, and 22 balloons in Diddy Kong Racing.

This week, I played through the remake of Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening on a family member's Switch. My thoughts:

  • I did notice some changes, like collectable stone pieces and Dampé's shack, were added to the remake. I didn't have the time to pursue them further, but it's interesting that it wasn't a 1:1 remake. (I was originally so skeptical of Nintendo that I wasn't sure if the Color Dungeon would be included in the remake. It was, but I didn't have time to play through it.)
  • Even after giving it a fair shake, I still argue that the graphical choice undermines the more serious tone of the game. That is just my opinion, but I have to admit that the game looks good.
  • Speaking of the graphics, why does the framerate chug so often?
  • Like the graphical style, the soundtrack felt more subdued. Even the Animal Village theme felt less intriguing and jarring than it did in the Game Boy original. However, I did like the Angler's Cave and Face Shrine remixes. I also noticed that the final phase of the last boss had a unique track, which wasn't the case in the original.
  • I'm glad the remake makes full use of the controller. Being able to run and lift items without having to equip anything to a face button was a nice Quality of Life change.
  • Not being able to use the D-Pad was a miss. GREZZO insisted that players only use the left thumbstick, so you'll probably find yourself facing the wrong direction, when dashing.
  • The use of 2D animation helped separate the visual style of the main game from its opening and ending.
Overall, I enjoyed my time with the remake. Link's Awakening is still a great game no matter how you play, but I'll always direct first-time players to the Game Boy original.

Wonderful game overall. Combat does get a smidge stale, but variety of weapons and story being on-rails throughout made the occasional collective hunt (that there are few of) a pleasant mini-break from plowing onward with story.

Too bad majority of collectibles are either too tedious or too repetitive like the combat is, but overall story and overall gameplay were solid.

I discovered Time Crisis 5 boots flawlessly in Proton and played it with a mouse and keyboard, which was really hard because the cursor is invisible.

Wasn't successful with the Windows 7 version of Pokken though, just booted into a black screen.

Plowed through AC Black Flag (resynced) - WHAT a game! Combat had decent challenge compared to 1&2 and let you stealth of swash buckle through most missions as you pleased. Map is gorgeous and ship travel and combat are absolute gold from peak bubisoft era. Side stuff is fun and oftentimes main missions will leave you in new islands to go rummage through for booty & treasure maps that encourage you to see other islands, and most of it doesn't really feel all too grindy to get enough upgrades and gear for the endgame (and many are arguably skippable once you get used to melee combat). Fast travel is a godsent if you get tired of knots and knots of sea shanty traversal. Parkour is decent, but IMO a step down from fluidity of AC1&2. Story is on-rails enough with pleasant suggested detours, and side stuff doesn't really affect anything in the main story.

And in a way, while AC1 made quite the splash with its setting, Black Flag should've been the first game of the series by far - you start completely unaware and away from the whole order and only intermingle with it by pure chance and greed, and that makes for a better player connection to the plot and general idea than AC1&2.

Installed VisionsOfMana

Played a bit. Plot got more derpy and derpy.
And then. I realized "ah it's one of those /can't defy destiny" games"

My least favorite kind

Then it did the NieRReplicant "timeskip" thing and I was like:

"I don't think I will waste space on my harddrive for thisf"

DELETED

I call that an achievement

Slowly clearing sokoban levels, some of them just confuse me but strangely at some point it just clicks. Anyway just my kind of fun I guess!
