So with upcoming Atmosphere release we were told to stay on or below 4.1.0 for possible software coldboot. But now with the release of AutoRCM, is there any point at all to stay on the low firmware?
Id ask Sciresm or Kate but doubt they have the time or will to answer such questions :)
To me it seems like we dont lose anything at all by updating.
Am I wrong?

Auto RCM just cuts out the need for a jig, you still have to deliver a payload via the USB-C port.
So yeah, stay on low FW if you want a chance of cold boot (no payload via USB) anytime soon.

AutoRCM is NOT cooldboot. If you want coolboot any time soon, wait in the lowest firmware you can.
I see. I was under the impression that once the payload is injected for the first time it eliminates the need for further injections.
Sorry for that!
I guess the wait continues :(

There will never be coldboot above 1.0.0, the sortmods will still require user action. Persistent CFW will not happen without autorcm and a modchip soldered to the D+ and D- testpads on the PCB.

As for staying on lower FW if you are on <--- 4.1.0 you get a non persistent softmod and lower FW will prob be more stable, but that is really it.

If you are using autorm and have no problem with it, there is not much point.

I think 4.1.0 isn't going to support coldboot, only lower firmwares are.
I updated my Switch yesterday anyway, originally I stayed on 4.1.0 knowing CFW would come soon, but then it became known exactly how the exploit works, and now that pretty much everything released works on 5.x, I don't see much reason to stay on old firmware.
I can deal with having to use RCM, I can always use OTG on my phone or buy one of the TX dongles. I was one of the original Gateway 3DS purchasers, back when you had to have one MicroSD for every game (and I only had a couple so I had to use my PC to switch out games a lot) and I managed just fine. This isn't any more of a hassle than that was.

What do you mean by user action? Something like early 3ds cfw entry via DS entrypoint?

<= 4.1 ? or equal to or lower than 4.1.0 or just lower than 4.1.0 ?

Yep, would basically be the same as the homebrew launcher on 3.0.0, go to a website follow some steps and then it would reboot into RCM.

We will never have something easy such as Haxchi or anything similar.

4.1.0 and lower.

You do realize how hard you are making it to stay on 4 1 0 right? :D

I am staying on 4.1.0 until Deja Vu is released, if the Deja Vu method is more hassle than RCM i will update... A lot of things are tested more on lower FW so if you want greater compatibility and stability stay on 4.1.0

I thought I read this as well. Shame one can't be certain. I have read 'it does matter' and 'it doesn't matter' so often. Always from people who appear to know more than I do!

Then someone will chip in, as in this thread, with some reason why it does matter that I don't understand only to be countered by someone saying that whilst it does matter what one gains means very little. So it doesn't matter. But it does.

I just wait!

The thing is we are waiting for a bus to come but we don't know what it will look like, what time it's coming, where its going or whether it has anything fun inside or not! haha. Or how you get on it or get it to stop. (this analogy just won't stop giving..)

I think I remember it from SciresM, but I may be wrong. One way or other, stay in 4.1. Never listen to jjbredesen. He's well known here for missunderstanding things.

yall im torn... ive been hacking away at tales of phantasia GBA (the USA version) and have so many documents of reverse engineering i've done
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
I just found out that the EU version is better in literally every way, better sound quality, better lighting, and there's even a patch someone made to make the text look nicer
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
Do I restart now using what i've learned on the EU version since it's a better overall experience? or do I continue with the US version since that is what ive been using, and if someone decides to play my hack, it would most likely be that version?
  • Sicklyboy @ Sicklyboy:
@TwoSpikedHands, I'll preface this with the fact that I know nothing about the game, but, I think it depends on what your goals are. Are you trying to make a definitive version of the game? You may want to refocus your efforts on the EU version then. Or, are you trying to make a better US version? In which case, the only way to make a better US version is to keep on plugging away at that one ;)
  • Sicklyboy @ Sicklyboy:
I'm not familiar with the technicalities of the differences between the two versions, but I'm wondering if at least some of those differences are things that you could port over to the US version in your patch without having to include copyrighted assets from the EU version
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
@Sicklyboy I am wanting to fully change the game and bend it to my will lol. I would like to eventually have the ability to add more characters, enemies, even have a completely different story if i wanted. I already have the ability to change the tilemaps in the US version, so I can basically make my own map and warp to it in game - so I'm pretty far into it!
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
I really would like to make a hack that I would enjoy playing, and maybe other people would too. swapping to the EU version would also mean my US friends could not legally play it
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
I am definitely considering porting over some of the EU features without using the actual ROM itself, tbh that would probably be the best way to go about it... but i'm sad that the voice acting is so.... not good on the US version. May not be a way around that though
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
    I appreciate the insight!
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
@TwoSpikedHands just switch, all the knowledge you learned still applies and most of the code and assets should be the same anyway
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
    and realistically they wouldn't

be able to play it legally anyway since they need a ROM and they probably don't have the means to dump it themselves

do y'all think having an sd card that has a write speed of 700kb/s is a bad idea?

  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
@Karma177 that sd card is 100% faulty so yes, its a bad idea
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
even the slowest non-sdhc sd cards are a few MB/s
  • Karma177 @ Karma177:
@The Real Jdbye it hasn't given me any error trying to write things on it so I don't really think it's faulty (pasted 40/50gb+ folders and no write errors)
