Apparently, Square Enix is planning to open a Canadian studio in 2012. That's the gist of it, but here's the full article from Joystiq.

Square Enix is reportedly negotiating with several Canadian provincial governments to open a second studio in the country. Squeenix already has Eidos Montreal (Deus Ex: Human Revolution), which it acquired in the buyout of the publisher in 2009. According to La Presse, the new studio would employ "at least" 100 people, with Vancouver, Toronto and Montreal up for potential locations.

Square is expected to determine the location of the second studio by the end of May, with offices opening in 2012 to develop games for "the new consoles from Microsoft, Sony and Nintendo," which will require more attention and staff, according to Eidos Montreal Director Stéphane D'Astous.

And the "Canadian shift" marches ever onward.[/p]

If it opens in Vancouver... I can hope to get a job there!

On a side-note: any Vancouvrites here know of any studios around the Lower Mainland besides EA?

Isn't that studio who made Dead Rising 2 in Burnaby? Blue Castle or something. I think Backbone Entertainment is in B.C too.

Anyways, it'd be amazing if this happened in Vancouver. I'd be excited.

Typical of my good fortunes, yet another studio that's not opening here in Coventry.

To be fair though this city is a shit hole.

Just did a quick search. Yeah, Blue Castle is a game developer recently acquired by CAPCOM.

Ubisoft doesn't churn out any good games...

Still
TORONTO!

Depends on what your definition of Good is, I mean, Assassin's Creed, Prince of Persia, Splinter Cell, Raving Rab... oh that's the Montreal studio? Okay then, ignore what I said.

Interesting- some of the SE studios outside Japan have done a lot of interesting things these last couple of years.

As for placement- traditionally industry goes where other industry is (feeder industries- mo cap and stuff like that being down the road is quite nice, easier to poach people from other companies and probably some existing tax breaks, investment opportunities and other incentives). People do try to buck the trend but it usually does not go so well (see the so called brain drain in southern US aside from California and Nevada despite best efforts at very high levels).

This. And speaking of brain drain, the only thing NFLD has for video games is Other Ocean, which has really only done ports and some unrecognizably small download games. *sigh*

Ubisoft main office is in montreal.

Also, since Eidos is in Montreal, Square-Enix will probably choose montreal. Would make it easy for their two offices to collaborate if they're right next to each others.

now i won't be surprised if it is there, since with that being said , there's a 99.9% chance of it being there . . .

i thought everybody knew cocktails are like 75% ice
  • Veho @ Veho:
    Yeah but not like this.
  • Veho @ Veho:
It's not like they're complaining that their Slurpee is 99% ice or something, but if the cocktail calls for "shot of vodka, shot of vermouth, shot of gin, shot of Campari, three shots of juice, squirt of lemon" and ends up being a thimbleful of booze, that's a problem.
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
the funny thing is cocktails in norway are only allowed to have 1 20ml shot of booze
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
    so..... yeah
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
we're used to only having a thimbleful of booze

    Booo.

same thing if you want whisky on the rocks or something, you can't get a double
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
but you could buy as many shots of whisky (or anything else) as you want and ask for a glass of ice and pour them in
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
    it's dumb

    Maybe.

There was a comparison of the number of Ibuprofen poisonings before and after they limited the maximum dosage per box or per pill (i'll look that up). No limit on the number of boxes you can still buy as many as you want, so people argued it was pointless.
  • Veho @ Veho:
But the number of (accidental) poisonings dropped because drinking an entire package of ibuprofen pills went from "I need a new liver" to "I need a new box of Ibuprofen".
  • Veho @ Veho:
Here we have ketoprofen that used to be prescription-only because of the risk of toxic dosages, but then they halved the dose per pill and sell them in bottles of six pills apiece instead of twenty and it doesn't need a prescription any more. Yes you can buy more than one bottle but people simply don't.
  • Psionic Roshambo @ Psionic Roshambo:
Usually accidentally overdose of ibuprofen here is from people taking like cold medicine then ibuprofen for a headache and the combination is over what they need
