SCE president and CEO Andrew House says healthy sales of Nintendo's 3DS proves that, despite the doom and gloom naysayers, there's still sufficient demand for dedicated gaming portables.

"The sales of the 3DS, having the advantage of releasing a little bit ahead of us, have been exceedingly good. I think that shows that there is, in general, a lot of demand for a gaming-primary portable device," House told the PlayStation Blog.

The mirrors the sentiments of SCEE president and CEO Jim Ryan, who recently said Sony is "encouraged" by 3DS' success over the holidays.

House hopes that people who discover gaming on other devices may 'graduate', in a sense, to more sophisticated games on Vita.

"But our device in contrast has just so much more to offer," added House. "What I think we've done is point to a market that really has started out with potentially casual games on other devices, but now wants a deeper, better or more premier gaming experience," he said.

I like what Sony are doing, they are pushing away the Vita vs 3DS wars and turning the 3DS and Vita into a team against all the app games, I for one think that dedicated gaming handhelds will only get more popular, regardless of how popular smart phones are.

Would be cool if Nintendo and Sony decided to merge and form one company.

The first playstation was actually an snes with a cd-rom drive attached. Nintendo ended up bailing on the agreement.

Well, really, when he is saying the vita has more to offer he is he saying this against the 3DS. Heres the quote without the break.

So really, he's underhandedly saying Vita is better than the 3DS. Eh, whatch the interview, then decide.

They bailed because the contract between the two was worded to give Sony all the royalties from the attachment, both hardware and software.
They tried later with a full stand-alone unit that had SNES cartridge support, but Nintendo wanted more than the gain that the SNES side of it offered.

They both were being greedy.

Nintendo bailed because the contract gave Sony all profits from the sale of the SNES-CD software while Nintendo got profits for the sale of cartridges. So if Nintendo was to release a Zelda game on this SNES-CD format, they wouldn't make money off the sales, and royalties would be arranged later, of course they made a deal with Philips that gave them full control(lets not start getting into the Zelda CDi games in this thread, ok guys?). Sony continued development and later that year Sony tried to relaese a stand alone console, where Nintendo then sued on the basis they owned the name. Nintendo lost, so they made some units with cartridge and CD support. After making another deal with Nintendo, giving Nintendo more profits from sales, Sony decided to ditch the SNES port and call it PlayStation(no space) and after all this Nintendo could still use the Sony audio chip in the SNES.

I'll always be a fan for dedicated gaming handhelds, yes it's very useful having a smartphone, but for something you can just lose yourself in and has (hopefully) a plethora of good games to chose from -(that it's made for) will always win in my books. That's just because I prefer gaming.

@SylverReZ, I also heard one of the Prince of Persia games was so unfinished that it required the "24/7 online" drm so a puzzle could be done and the game could be finished. And that when the Ubisoft servers were closed the (cracked) game was impossible to finish or something like that
  • SylverReZ @ SylverReZ:
@Xdqwerty, That's extra scummy. Ubisoft nowadays ship out incomplete games like Skull and Bones which was being worked on for nearly a decade now.

I like that games can be fixed after the fact, hate that it's being abused via beta tests... And DLC... I was a 7800 owner back in the day and loved Impossible Mission, turns out I couldn't beat it because it was actually impossible lol
