i just found a faster way to get sysupdater to run... using playcoin setter... 1. get into HBL 2. enter playcoin and modify to 10 coins 3. press L + R + DOWN + B 4. go into sysUpdater and press Y .... WORKED on second try in a 2ds on 10.3

someone needs to link your post to the OP
you are a god
also this video from a few pages back

and the link for sysupdater from page 95,

this is what worked for me, it was not working even after the tricks in the video above, but after i did the eshop thing it worked on the 1st try for me
i went to the eshop let it create the data , then i went to ftpbrony after launching the HBL from menuhax let it go till i saw the horse logo and hit b twice like you said i went to sysupdater and it worked like a charm after that!
i must have tried like 100 times before reading this with no luck and then it worked on the 1t try!
also it is a US N3ds XL red from launchday that was on 9.2 previously, now i just need to test and make sure it really worked and if i can get rxtools emunand and cias to work
now

After almost 2 fucking days of random shit, it finally booted for me after doing the eshop setup + brony spamming. I also did the database repair trick prior as well on a meticulously formatted and copied sd card (and tool kit)...

Was it luck finally? Guess I'll find out later when I do my second usa n3ds =/

try this next time;; 1. get into HBL 2. enter playcoin and modify to 10 coins 3. press L + R + DOWN + B 4. go into sysUpdater and press Y

You forgot the part about crossing your fingers and knocking on wood with one hand while rubbing a four leaf clover on a natural redhead's hair with the other with a rabbit's foot in your mouth (blech.)

Wait? Do you mean you escaped the softbrick loop without formatting?

Basically =/

Take it with a giant grain of salt that it worked when I did this combination:

-used sd formatter > overwrite erase (fucking takes forever) and size correction
-installed the db files into the Nintendo 3ds/random number/random number/ folder
-ran the repair of said database via system settings data management
-ran the eshop until all setup
-booted from menuhax went to brony spammed b button, then ran sysUpdater
-profit?

who knows... I kept seeing this kind of thing for days and thought fuck me why won't it work when I do it, and then it randomly does /shrug

I have not seen the tool you are talking about. sounds useful though.
here i found the link to it , but now i am not sure where to put it
https://github.com/ihaveamac/downgrade-check

do i just put both the .3dsx and the .smdh files in the /3ds folder? or do i have to create another folder in /3ds to put them in like i had to do for sysUpdater ?
not sure what i would name the folder though

Last edited by weatMod,
I don't think it could be anything in the SD card, or anything in those dbs. Because I tried it with a clean SD card that I reformatted and placed in the system fresh, with just the homebrew stuff, update files, and sysupdater, and that didn't help.

you want to create a folder under 3ds and then throw both the files in there and you should be able to get to it from the homebrew menu.

So the thing involving the db files caused you to lose your save data?

Ya when you add in the db files the system sees a change and "repairs" it (wipes it out and fixes the formats and databases). I don't even know how I could have gotten around this if I tried keeping my old saves. Digital is a mess on these things =(

put the downgrade-check.3dsx, downgrade-check.smdh, index.lua all in the 3ds folder, no subfolder or it won't run for some reason, then you will see it in the homebrew menu when you boot using menuhax or w/e you are using to hit homebrew

What you linked to is a *Hax 2.x 3DSX file. Just drop the .3dsx and .smdh files into a folder under /3ds (such as /3ds/downgrade-check) on your memory card and it should show up in the Homebrew Launcher. EDIT: Woops. Didn't know it needed the index.lua.

what do you mean every third try, when i try to launch it it gives me a black screen?

--------------------- MERGED ---------------------------

Someone helped me find out the problem. the latest update of super smash bros requires a higher firmware. You will need to use CFW or Gateway emunand to play it.
Yea, but with a fresh formatted system there shouldn't be any updates I think... Or does Nintendo install the updates to the cartridge?

I've played ssb on 9.2.0 before...

yeah i already put the .3dsx and the .smdh in the /3ds folder and ran it but it gave an error "can't find index.lua file"
but now i can't figure out how download the index.lua file from the git there is no way to download it ,i have no idea how to use git, how do i download that file?
god i fucking hate git hub it's retarded

Ok, so what sysupdater i use right now?

I am lost with all these posts in the thread.
What is the best method today ?

Tried maybe 6-7 times using the sysUpdater linked to in the OP and kept getting the "Failed to get CIA file info" error message. Changed to julian20's build and it worked on the 2nd try via menuhax. Not a single soft brick using either on a N3DS XL.

Yeah, Git sucks. After "viewing" the file, just right click view raw and save that. It probably doesn't matter much with the LUA though as it is a plain text file though (you could even copy and paste. I'm not sure if it cares about Windows versus *nix line endings though.) Also, you can just download the whole thing as a zip file which works fine here.
