Gaming Sands of destruction help

Okay, im playing sands of destruction and am a bit confused.

you can use the x and y buttons for different attacks.. should i stick with using just x, or?

early on until you empower your skills i stuck to using the x button skills, later on you can fortify the y button skills and chain them
