Is there anyway to do this? My dad feels like he was ripped off and I'd like to know if there are any methods like cfw or something? I'm a beginner when it comes to ps3.

i beliieve the cobra dongle allows all ps3's to play ps2 games, but the compatibility is terrible, there are graphical glitches all over the shop and you have to use a usb cable to control the games

im not an expert, but i think the problem was the PS3s (the slims and some of the old phats) had the actual PS2 hardware removed for cost reasons. Apparently the PS3 isnt strong enough to emulate PS2 without the hardware.

To get perfect compatibility from emulation, it needs to be done via low level emulation. PCSX2 is already hardware demanding and it is high level emulation.

Without native PS2 hardware, compatibility sucks on PS3. All PS3 slim cannot play PS2.

Nope, absolutely no way. Only the earlier FAT models could do that :P

Thats not at ALL true! Have you seen the cobra USB dongle? if you are jailbroken and have this device you can use multiman to play your PS2 titles with software based emulation (since this is software based it will not support all titles. in BC models it enables full hardware backup support (Will play any PS2 title)

Well, I heard bad things about it (low compatibility and such) and also keep in mind that when this thread was posted there was still no way to downgrade new PS3s ;)

Anyway, got a link to that? I'd like to enquire in its functionality for BC PS3s (like mine) :D

Like I said a BC unit has full Backwartds compatability the only thing the cobra dongle will add to this is the ability to play 'backups" of PS2 software. Let me see if I can find the sites main page.

Unfortunately the compatability of non BC units is pretty bad....

Oh and the dongle maker is the same pig behind the true blue so if you have any resaons to not want that prick to get paid like I do please do not buy this device.

What restricts the slim? I'm just curious at this point.
They removed the PS2 hardware.

The original PS3 had some PS2 parts in it (just like the PS2 had PS1 parts in it, the DS had GBA parts in it, etc.), but they started removing parts as time went on to make it cheaper, which killed PS2 compatibility.

it's stated above, ps3 not powerful enough to do high level emulation for ps2 backup/disk and the BC(backward Compatible) systems that were only in some of the fat models, was taken out during the slim redesign for cots concerns so this is what restricts the slim.

lol dang Rydian, beat me to the punch

The Emotion Engine was Indeed in the 60gb and 20gb ps3 models However they removed that and had a Pure Software emulation running in the 80gb 4 usb port model that shipped with metal gear as well as on its own and was Able to emulate PS3 fine via software With the emotion engine removed, The real Reason they cancelled ps2 compatibility was they found games with ps2/3 versions Did not sell well on ps3 because folks were electing to buy a ps2 version of the game instead. since they were typically 20-30 dollars less than a ps3 version for the same game.

Well yes thats why they removed the software related emulation which was actually really quite crappy..... It's compatability was not even over 80% if I recall correctly. However this is not the point.... They removed the hardware for it to save on cost for the console because the $400+ units were not moving at all. stores around the world were overstocked so they dropped the price and PS2 hardware to make a more affordable model. Unfortunately sony later anondonned the PS2 emulation support in a firmware version between 2 and 3 for "unknown" resons. The reason Money talks and BS walks.... Because of this a non BC unit running a firmware above 2.41 (may be wrong bout that version number) can't run PS2 titles unless you are on 3.55 CFW with a cobra dongle.

supposedly, sony didn't want ps2 game sales to be competing with those of the ps3, so they removed ps2 bc entirely. since the next playstation will not have cell, as stated by sony, it's unlikely it will be bc with ps3 games. u should expect less and less compatibility with future console generations.

Oh my god!!! your dad feels riped off so there MUST be something that plays ps2 games on ps3 or all hell will broke lose...... really???????????? To answer your question, the answer is NO, slims do not play ps3 games, but if all he wants is to play god of war 1 and 2 on his ps2 slim go buy the HD ports :D
