Final Fantasy III or IV were pretty good, they weren't as time consuming though. I also liked Avalon Code, it was fun, you can also try pokemon mystery dungeon.

Time consuming is depend on each individual , but I strongly recommend The World Ends With You , SRW OG Saga , Valkyrie Profile COTP and Luminous Arc .

Heck yeah! Definately go for Avalon Code. And Valkyrie Profile: CotP. Lost Magic is a tad old, but still an awesome RPG/RTSt game. Chrono Trigger would be a good one too.

FFIV is a solid game, if you haven't played it before. (And maybe if you have.) FFIII is the same way, but I like IV more.

Soma Bringer is kind of like FF Crystal Chronicles DS, in that its an off/online ARPG, kind of, but its also flawed in really similar ways. (Boring, repetitive combat, unimaginitive bosses, I could give a shit about story.) Solid for a few hours of gameplay so far, though I doubt I'll pick it back up having just cleared the game with one dude, and with a few others around L15-L20.

Ragnarok Online DS is also kind of okay, but also kind of like RO itself - stupid, teidous, deep character building with almost no character building... But feels like RO on the DS. Controls well. I wish online would happen at any time instead of in one L50 dungeon, because it isn't worth playing to L50, so far.

Super Robot Taisen OG Saga was great, with no replay value. Awesome art and graphics, stupid story, interesting and engaging battle system, a little difficult to figure out where to go, but travel is easy and the world map is straightforward. New Game + removes stats and skills, but leaves gear, which made the game stupid.

Suikoden Tierkris was okay but I forget everything about it, so I guess it wasn't worth it.

I think that's all the recent RPG's I've played. Still have Shin Megami Tensei DS that I haven't played, and I'll probably try Blood of Bahamut sometime this weekend. (Looking forward to it!)

My World My Way has a fun story that lampoons and makes fun of RPG conventions while breaking the 4th wall. The only negative is it could be short in your eyes. I'm towards the end and only about 21 hours in.

Super Robot Taisen I second/third/fourth. It's not a Pokemon-like story, though, but it's full of sexual innuendo a lot of ecchi/harem animes have. Plus it features Kos-Mos in it as a playable character. I really enjoyed the game's combat system, too, it was a great change of pace.

Suikoden is great, though a bit slow story-wise and unfortunately a bit forgettable. Plus it's huge thanks to every line of dialogue almost having voice over work. If you can get over these limitations, it could easily consume you, though, as you play through the story to unlock new party characters to swap in and out of battles.

Here's a weird recommendation: Zubo. It has the collection aspect of Pokemon, as you play through the game you unlock new Zubos that join your party and you can swap them at any time from the pause menu. The game features an almost rhythm game-like combat system, where you touch the screen at indicated times to a beat to increase damage/heals/buffs/debuffs. It's a short game, but pretty fun while it lasts.

I'd recommend FFIII if you want a time consuming game. By that I mean, max out all jobs. Get the Onion Set and the find the Legendary Smith
