What do you mean, won't update? This is serious stuff, O.o, since I'm the one currently maintaining it.

well, it was downloading an update, but after directly proposed to reboot, no changes taken

;)

and yay, topic-wise:

they dont have a right to put any DMCA over them, site just contains public keys, aint no selling or giving out piracy products, in the way the mama-N f*ed up big time there by giving same title key to every console

;)

Were you using UN? Which version of UN and Luma were you using? Did you update to hourly or stable?

Also, they do. Section 1201.

So is it still okay to use freeshop if we had it downloaded already?

I saw a similar question on reddit but they got an earful about the dangers of piracy ._.

Yes, it's still safe to use it. And I recommend switching to CIAngel if you haven't already (since freeShop's cache doesn't update anymore)

Sorry for the even more noobish question, but if the cache doesn't update what does that mean for users? Will the freeshop cease working even with updated titlekeys?

This is incorrect, Cruel has already mentioned above that the cache will still be able to update.

Not true, TheCruel said he's going to be keeping the cache updated, it's hosted in a different repo, so will continue to be available.

Fuck Nintendo.

If anyone wants to know whether I'm going to counter it, I'm not yet sure. That could permit them to file lawsuit against me and I'm already legally battling more serious charges unrelated to freeShop that left me relatively poor. I'm not going to ask for donations to battle it either since I will likely not get enough and it's probably not worth it.

Cache updates will still work for now. But I'm looking into alternative source/build hosting solutions.

They cite no legitimate violation, from my understanding, except the use of Nintendo's logo on the CIA build (unrelated to the source repos, and they took them all down). That was a mere oversight and I have no problem changing that logo, it requires changing a single line in the source.

To claim it circumvents any protections is laughable, though I'm unsure if it's legally sound (law is often laughable itself). It only circumvents protections if people utilize title keys they did not purchase or obtain legally. If people illegally obtain the password/PINs of a person's bank account, you can't criticize the banking website for facilitating theft. And the argument can be used against their own eShop application, which facilitates theft by installing unowned copies of Nintendo's games when users merely install tickets locally. The only difference is freeShop gives slightly more control over ticket installation, you can even install tickets with nonsense keys you give it and they'll just fail.

Grab the Logo.bnr from Homebrew Loader.Cia
put it in Freeshop

It uses a custom one that doesnt contain nintendos logo

I know, it's even been in the open-source makerom for a while, I just need to change a single line in the rsf, like how SteveIce10 just did hours ago lol: https://github.com/Steveice10/buildtools/commit/2ef982ddbd9ae2d78052a42a2144fbc408bb30ea

Would probably look even better with a custom logo.
yeah a few visual tweaks, banner, startup screen and free shop logo on startup and you could probably try get the dmca overturned, would like to see that happen even if you do switch the primary host elsewhere

Fight the good fight @TheCruel ! I have faith in your abilities to host FreeShop elsewhere, possibly even somewhere semi-locally, where it can't be DMCA'd. :)

In the meantime, thank you for everything thus far, and we ALL look forward to what you do next. :yay3ds:

  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
yall im torn... ive been hacking away at tales of phantasia GBA (the USA version) and have so many documents of reverse engineering i've done
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
I just found out that the EU version is better in literally every way, better sound quality, better lighting, and there's even a patch someone made to make the text look nicer
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
Do I restart now using what i've learned on the EU version since it's a better overall experience? or do I continue with the US version since that is what ive been using, and if someone decides to play my hack, it would most likely be that version?
  • Sicklyboy @ Sicklyboy:
@TwoSpikedHands, I'll preface this with the fact that I know nothing about the game, but, I think it depends on what your goals are. Are you trying to make a definitive version of the game? You may want to refocus your efforts on the EU version then. Or, are you trying to make a better US version? In which case, the only way to make a better US version is to keep on plugging away at that one ;)
  • Sicklyboy @ Sicklyboy:
I'm not familiar with the technicalities of the differences between the two versions, but I'm wondering if at least some of those differences are things that you could port over to the US version in your patch without having to include copyrighted assets from the EU version
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
@Sicklyboy I am wanting to fully change the game and bend it to my will lol. I would like to eventually have the ability to add more characters, enemies, even have a completely different story if i wanted. I already have the ability to change the tilemaps in the US version, so I can basically make my own map and warp to it in game - so I'm pretty far into it!
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
I really would like to make a hack that I would enjoy playing, and maybe other people would too. swapping to the EU version would also mean my US friends could not legally play it
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
I am definitely considering porting over some of the EU features without using the actual ROM itself, tbh that would probably be the best way to go about it... but i'm sad that the voice acting is so.... not good on the US version. May not be a way around that though
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
    I appreciate the insight!
