I've had this r4 for a good year so far, I probably won't be getting a new one. I specifically got it for my DSi. I checked my DSi's info and it was still on 1.3.. I was thinking.. does keeping it on 1.3 do anything? Or should I go ahead and go to 1.4? (R4i has 1.4 firmware.

) Will it make a difference? Like let me play different games?

You can't use the DSi Browser or download DSiware without updating. You aren't missing out on much by not updating.

Oh and by the way, the latest DSi firmware is 1.4.1 not 1.4. Unless an update is released for your cart I'd advise you not to update.

In all likelyhood, if you update you will no longer be able to use your cart.

You have no control over which version of the DSi's firmware it will update to, it will just update to the latest 1.4.1. The same version which is likely to block your cart.
