WOW. So i'm messing around with ApprenticeMinusDS trying to determine why my separate SGG rom folder named '0 - Sega Game Gear' kept getting listed at the back when instead it should have been first. This emulator has a really shittake way of organizing folders.
It does not alphabetic-numeric sorts folders by their names using the 0-9 and then A-Z order of precedence. The damn thing sorts folders by time, oldest created folders placed at front and newest all the way to the bottom. Total garbage setup.
No problem because there's a round about way to fix this.
Method A (Jumping through Rings of Fire)
Done on Windows 8, adjust steps for your Operating System
In Windows File Explorer while viewing your R4i's micro SD card, highlight all the folders you wish to sort. You can skip highlight folders you wish to place up front on ApprenticeMinusDS.
Press the Copy path option found in the Home tab. This will copy your folders directory addresses.
Open a text editor like Notepad. Press Ctrl+V to paste your folders addresses.
Press Ctrl+H to open up the Replace text search. Separately type in the "D:\ (or whatever letter drive it is) -and- the " quotation symbol to do a quick pattern delete, leaving only your folders' exact names.
Get a file batch renaming program like Advanced Renamer. For this specific program, it has under Renaming method list in Add method a way to rename folders by List.
In List , copy and paste from Notepad all your folder names.
Now back onto the root of your SD card, create a New folder. Within this folder, create more New folder(s) with an exact number of folders matching those in your List. You want to create empty folders that match the total of those you wish to sort alpha-numerically.
Highlight select all these blank folders. Left-click mouse hold, drag and drop them onto Advanced Renamer to queue them. Hit the START BATCH to rename all these blank folders with matching names to your actual folders you plan to sort.
Go back to the root of your micro SD, highlight select + drag and drop all your actual folders into the root's New folder. This will merge your two sets of folders together and update your folders time stamps.
This method is for those who have WAY too many roms and folders that makes it impractical to resort to Method B due to transfer time and hard drive storage constraints.

Method B (easy)
In case you don't have that many roms or folders to deal in sorting, you can also make duplicates by highlighting, copying, and pasting all those folders somewhere else like on your computer or even the SD card root New folder. You then back copy and replace your originals. This should update the folders' created dates/times.

Other than the folder sorting, ApprenticeMinusDS emulation performance is top notch!

COOL TRICK for R4i cards that use the WOODR4 kernel firmware.
You can hide the folders in the rom selection. To make these folders hidden, just make them hidden in Windows. How easy and cool is that?
