I set up my Switch when I first got it so, yeah if you make a new account on switch you can have symbols in your name if you use your mii as your avatar in your profile pic.

Thanks, that's what I thought, I was just hoping there was a way of adding symbols to already existing accounts' nicknames.

If you really want to get the symbols in your name, I think you can press the volume button while the system is turning on. Then it will go into maintenance mode where you can format and keep data, not sure.

That'll keep users (with their names, tried it), but it isn't that important.

alright, i decided to join the splatoon hype.. (never got into the game, never liked it much on wii u, got bored of it fast)
