I'm trying to play Valkyrie Profile on my PSP. The PSX version.

Whenever I access the equipment park of the menu, it freezes.
I've tried various popstation version from 3.8 to 4.01.
I've tried converting the ISO a couple of times, various compression levels.

Anyone ever get this game to work?

Have you tried out Valkyrie Profile Lenneth?
It's a PSP port of Valkyrie Profile but with some extras.
There's also an undub version floating around too.

The PSP version is inferior to me. Although it has new cutscenes and whatnot, it's actually based on the easier Japanese version.

Also coupled with things like them removing the ability to sort items, I'd rather play PSX version.

Oh and another reason is because I'm transferring my save between the PSP and the PS1 memory card so I can play on my console when I'm home.

Cons:
-Game looks blurry at times, due to widescreen.
-Cannot sort items
-Cannot switch characters in the menus using L/R
-Cannot change equipment of inactive party members
-Lenneth's skills are removed when changing equipment
-PWSs are glitchy

Thanks for the reply though.

Wow....i hated the Caves of Oblivion mechanic in the US version and would easily forgive all those issues for the JPN method.

Popstation is the conversion tool btw, pops is the emulator.

How did you rip your image and what firmware are you on? I ripped my US disc with Alcohol 52% and converted with Red Squirrels GUI v3.00, and using 5.00M33-6 and debugjunky's advice it seemed to work....although i got fed up and bought the UMD PSP version a little while later...

3.80, 3.90, 4.01 and 5.00 freeze at the game intro (after the line "How nostalgic"), however 3.71 gets past this, but it freezes when you go to the status screen, 3.80, 3.90 and 4.01 will let you access the status menu - so in summation: Load and play through the intro using 3.71 then when you get to the first dungen save and reboot in 3.80, 3.90 or 4.01. EBOOT made with PSX2PSP 1.4.2, tested on my 5.00 m33-6 slim - DebugJunky

Another cons :
- Changed battle English voice, no more "come to me my Einherjar".

I don't like the PSP version only for that modification!

It's based on the Norse mythology, use the correct word. We are not idiot to translate everything.

Well those are just some cons. There are others like enemies and bosses in the JP version don't have certain moves, making them easier, etc.

By the way, I'm on 5.50 GEN D3 and used PSP2PSX v1.4.2 and whichever popstation comes with that.

Cyan, you're right, that's a big con!

9 times out of 10 if you've followed the guide for the appropriate pops version then it comes down to the PSX image you've ripped from your discs and the popstation GUI you've used. Ripping with Alcohol and Clone CD is usually good, and CDDA Popstation 1.24 is good for some problematic games.

Re-rip the image with a CDDA ripper (just to be sure), remake the eboot and start over with popsloader.

Edit- I've just checked and you seem to be wrong about that last con...Enemies appear to have the same movesets...

Thanks for the reply.

I've actually tried to rip it sever ways and also downloaded two different eboots, one from a forum and one from a private tracker.

Tried 6 different versions of pop, from 3.11 to 4.01. I'm thinking maybe Valkyrie Profile just doesn't work on pops? At least on GEN D3?

You should get an already pre-compiled eboot. Like someone said, eboot itself depends heavily on the compression level and also the application in which was converted .

I got two separate pre-compiled eboots, both had same problem.
Also I tried various compression levels including no compression and maximum.

  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
Do I restart now using what i've learned on the EU version since it's a better overall experience? or do I continue with the US version since that is what ive been using, and if someone decides to play my hack, it would most likely be that version?
  • Sicklyboy @ Sicklyboy:
@TwoSpikedHands, I'll preface this with the fact that I know nothing about the game, but, I think it depends on what your goals are. Are you trying to make a definitive version of the game? You may want to refocus your efforts on the EU version then. Or, are you trying to make a better US version? In which case, the only way to make a better US version is to keep on plugging away at that one ;)
  • Sicklyboy @ Sicklyboy:
I'm not familiar with the technicalities of the differences between the two versions, but I'm wondering if at least some of those differences are things that you could port over to the US version in your patch without having to include copyrighted assets from the EU version
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
@Sicklyboy I am wanting to fully change the game and bend it to my will lol. I would like to eventually have the ability to add more characters, enemies, even have a completely different story if i wanted. I already have the ability to change the tilemaps in the US version, so I can basically make my own map and warp to it in game - so I'm pretty far into it!
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
I really would like to make a hack that I would enjoy playing, and maybe other people would too. swapping to the EU version would also mean my US friends could not legally play it
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
I am definitely considering porting over some of the EU features without using the actual ROM itself, tbh that would probably be the best way to go about it... but i'm sad that the voice acting is so.... not good on the US version. May not be a way around that though
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
    I appreciate the insight!
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
@TwoSpikedHands just switch, all the knowledge you learned still applies and most of the code and assets should be the same anyway
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
    and realistically they wouldn't

be able to play it legally anyway since they need a ROM and they probably don't have the means to dump it themselves
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
why the shit does the shitbox randomly insert newlines in my messages
  • Veho @ Veho:
It does that when I edit a post.
  • Veho @ Veho:
It inserts a newline in a random spot.
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
never had that i don't think
  • Karma177 @ Karma177:
do y'all think having an sd card that has a write speed of 700kb/s is a bad idea?
trying to restore emunand rn but it's taking ages... (also when I finished the first time hekate decided to delete all my fucking files )
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
@Karma177 that sd card is 100% faulty so yes, its a bad idea
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
even the slowest non-sdhc sd cards are a few MB/s
  • Karma177 @ Karma177:
@The Real Jdbye it hasn't given me any error trying to write things on it so I don't really think it's faulty (pasted 40/50gb+ folders and no write errors)
