PlayStation Studios is working on over 25 PlayStation 5 titles; "nearly half" being new IPs

While the PlayStation 5 will get new entries of its popular franchises like God of War and Horizon Zero Dawn (and there's reportedly even a remake of The Last of Us in the works), the console will get its fair share of new IPs under the PlayStation Studios brand. In a recent interview with Wired, Hermen Hulst, PlayStation Studios' lead, said that the group is working on over 25 games for the PS5, "nearly half of which are entirely new IP".

“There’s an incredible amount of variety originating from different regions,” Hulst said in the interview. “Big, small, different genres.” So we can expect indie as well as AAA titles in the mix. In the report, Wired mentioned that Ember Lab, the studio behind Kena: Bridge of Spirits, is working on its next title. It also name-dropped Haven Studios (from former Google Stadia vice president) and Firewalk Studios (working on an unannounced, new multiplayer IP) as studios having previously announced their partnership with Sony. So these could be hints about where some of those 25+ titles might be coming from.

Wired also notes that Guerrilla Games' Horizon Forbidden West is still slated to be released later this year and that the PS5 version of the game will make use of the DualSense’s haptics capabilities to allow for a "special sauce well beyond fast travel and graphical fidelity". "If you want to take a stealth approach to a combat situation and you dive into long grass, you can feel those long grass leaves,” Guerrilla studio director Angie Smets hinted in the report.

Yeah we're looking at years before seeing all of those 25+ titles come to the console. This console gen's library has been rather lackluster so far, especially with launch titles.

but this has always been the case, next gen consoles at first mainly get the same old multi platform games ported, which i really do not understand idiots that are shelling out scalper prices for the next gen, mainly to play these titles that are also on the last gen that you already own and can be played on next gen (or offer next gen upgrade for free).

this generation is a joke in terms of how many games it has exclusive to it (not system exclusives, but generation exclusives in general).

So this news is indeed great news, it covers exactly the weakest point of PS5 right now.
Until demand can come close to being met for these new consoles, it will remain a problem for potential sales figures of meaningful generation exclusives when a large number of would-be customers wouldn't even be able to play the games if they wanted to.

Honestly speaking I feel this generation just further proves the fact that PC gaming will overtake the console market entirely within the long run. That said it seems to be approaching much closer in the last two generations given that most of the biggest hits/best selling are either ports or remasters of previous generation games which are multi-plat and exclusivity is going down the toilet given that its effort is not worth the development money to just restrict yourself to one system. At this point exclusivity is just there to make the console relevant, and with that being the case the only strong one in that argument here which works with positive returns is Nintendo which is not a surprise given their fanbase is consistent throughout the years.

The age of the home console is basically on deaths door, this generation is a shining example that the only people really wanting a new console at this very moment are those with FOMO or kids who do not know better, or people that want to flaunt their ego about getting the latest and greatest thing while having very little to show for it in investment (unless they plan on reselling it afterwards)..

To all those out there with their newest console. I hope it really does fulfill you in some meaningful way. Otherwise, the truth is in plain sight. Whats the point in investing in brand new hardware just to buy games you already had from the old hardware? I do not get it, but I have not been a console guy since the X360 days.
I agree 100% with you that PCs are better for gaming than consoles (it is my main platform BTW), but I disagree that people will migrate to PC, as there are a huge audience that just want to flip a button and start playing. No matter how easy dealing with PC is today, the fact it can do a lot of things is daunting for many people.

There are other factors in play too. The advertisement of PC gaming is diffuse among many brands, while console advertisement is centralized and planed. Also the PC sales are very high worldwide, but here on third world, PC is disappearing from regular people's houses.

"and about a tenth of them will actually be fun, while the rest focuses on graphical woo." said the Sony representative as he aggressively rubbed his muddy shoes on a picture of Japan studio

"I'm not ready to go into detail yet, but we've developer a new engine called BBKs, it uses raytracing lighting to trigger certain responses in the brain and lure consumers the same way infants are attracted to shiny objects"

Man, gamers are so cynical now. It's understandable I guess because of anti-consumer corporate practices but it's still sad to see.
when the last 10 years have been feeding you nothing but shit games with a diamond in the rough every now and then you'd probably become overly cynical as well
people have a reason to become cynical- its mostly because everything around them is turning to shit

Hopefully we'll get less "mature" games and more cartoony games like Ratchet and Clank or even weeb games like Gravity Rush (far-fetched though).

No, It was never like this for all generations that I lived until now (my first console was a Master System, so lots of gens in my mind). We experienced consoles without system buyers, but never before I experience a whole generation live 6 months without a proper system buyer game.

If you remember any generation that was this bad in terms of games 6 months in, please let me know.

Over 25 new games??? That's a lot of new Bugsnax sequels to develop
Not enough sequels, one could argue

every generation is like this when starting out tho???
Consoles that had games six months in:
Ps4
Ps2
Xbox 360
Nintendo ds
Nintendo wii
Nintendo switch, Vita(im putting these two on the same line since they only work if we're counting ports)
NES
(Im missing some but you get my point)

  • Sicklyboy @ Sicklyboy:
@TwoSpikedHands, I'll preface this with the fact that I know nothing about the game, but, I think it depends on what your goals are. Are you trying to make a definitive version of the game? You may want to refocus your efforts on the EU version then. Or, are you trying to make a better US version? In which case, the only way to make a better US version is to keep on plugging away at that one ;)
  • Sicklyboy @ Sicklyboy:
I'm not familiar with the technicalities of the differences between the two versions, but I'm wondering if at least some of those differences are things that you could port over to the US version in your patch without having to include copyrighted assets from the EU version
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
@Sicklyboy I am wanting to fully change the game and bend it to my will lol. I would like to eventually have the ability to add more characters, enemies, even have a completely different story if i wanted. I already have the ability to change the tilemaps in the US version, so I can basically make my own map and warp to it in game - so I'm pretty far into it!
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
I really would like to make a hack that I would enjoy playing, and maybe other people would too. swapping to the EU version would also mean my US friends could not legally play it
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
I am definitely considering porting over some of the EU features without using the actual ROM itself, tbh that would probably be the best way to go about it... but i'm sad that the voice acting is so.... not good on the US version. May not be a way around that though
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
    I appreciate the insight!
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
@TwoSpikedHands just switch, all the knowledge you learned still applies and most of the code and assets should be the same anyway
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
    and realistically they wouldn't

be able to play it legally anyway since they need a ROM and they probably don't have the means to dump it themselves
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
why the shit does the shitbox randomly insert newlines in my messages
  • Veho @ Veho:
It does that when I edit a post.
  • Veho @ Veho:
It inserts a newline in a random spot.
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
never had that i don't think
  • Karma177 @ Karma177:
do y'all think having an sd card that has a write speed of 700kb/s is a bad idea?
trying to restore emunand rn but it's taking ages... (also when I finished the first time hekate decided to delete all my fucking files )
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
@Karma177 that sd card is 100% faulty so yes, its a bad idea
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
even the slowest non-sdhc sd cards are a few MB/s
  • Karma177 @ Karma177:
@The Real Jdbye it hasn't given me any error trying to write things on it so I don't really think it's faulty (pasted 40/50gb+ folders and no write errors)
