PlayStation Studios is working on over 25 PlayStation 5 titles; "nearly half" being new IPs
While the PlayStation 5 will get new entries of its popular franchises like God of War and Horizon Zero Dawn (and there's reportedly even a remake of The Last of Us in the works), the console will get its fair share of new IPs under the PlayStation Studios brand. In a recent interview with Wired, Hermen Hulst, PlayStation Studios' lead, said that the group is working on over 25 games for the PS5, "nearly half of which are entirely new IP".
“There’s an incredible amount of variety originating from different regions,” Hulst said in the interview. “Big, small, different genres.” So we can expect indie as well as AAA titles in the mix. In the report, Wired mentioned that Ember Lab, the studio behind Kena: Bridge of Spirits, is working on its next title. It also name-dropped Haven Studios (from former Google Stadia vice president) and Firewalk Studios (working on an unannounced, new multiplayer IP) as studios having previously announced their partnership with Sony. So these could be hints about where some of those 25+ titles might be coming from.
Wired also notes that Guerrilla Games' Horizon Forbidden West is still slated to be released later this year and that the PS5 version of the game will make use of the DualSense’s haptics capabilities to allow for a "special sauce well beyond fast travel and graphical fidelity". "If you want to take a stealth approach to a combat situation and you dive into long grass, you can feel those long grass leaves,” Guerrilla studio director Angie Smets hinted in the report.
