It has to be usb 2.0. usb 3.0 will have lots of problems. Also, you need one with external power supply.

The usb2.0 on vitatv does not have enough power to power an external drive.

I use one of these. A lot more convenient than a HD for the PSTV and fast enough. It's USB 3.0 and I've had no issues with it, just make sure you format it as MBR instead of GPT. I've even tried using it through a USB 3.0 hub (so I can still plug in controllers to pair) and it still works no problem. Just note that it won't charge controllers plugged in for more than 2 seconds.

Can I ask you what do you plan to add that you need 2tb ?
I have a 400gb micro sd card with SD2Vita and I have 200gb left
With like 50 vita games , all MAME games and every other retro system retroarch supports
Maybe 40 ps1 games
Psp games

I would recommend getting the SD2Vita adapter and a micro sd card 400gb to 1TB and leave the USB port empty for connecting multiple controllers in the future if you have company over or kids
Also if you travel with the pstv you won’t have to worry about that external drive
