Features:
  • most things seem to work: sound, gamepad controls, intro videos, etc;
  • barebones touchscreen controls in tablet mode;
  • OpenGL 2.1 rendering.

This port is still in a very early state. Expect issues and bad performance. I have not tested it on any other Switch except mine.
This port is not affiliated with or endorsed by Bethesda Softworks and contains no code or resources copyrighted by or belonging to Bethesda Softworks.
To play the game, you need to copy a licensed installation of Morrowind from your PC.

To install, unzip openmw_nx_v2.zip into the switch folder on your SD card. Then:
If you already have an OpenMW install on your PC:
  1. Copy your openmw.cfg into /switch/openmw/config/ (for Windows users: it's in Documents/My Games/OpenMW). You might have to correct the data paths in the cfg file for this to work.
  2. Copy your data files (esm, esp, bsa, contents of the Data Files folder) into /switch/openmw/data/.
If you don't, but you own Morrowind:
  1. Install Morrowind.
  2. Copy the Data Files folder and Morrowind.ini file from your Morrowind installation into /switch/openmw/data/.

Known issues:

  • Exiting the game using the HOME button during a loading screen will crash it.
  • Cursor sometimes displays when it shouldn't.
  • Performance isn't very good.
  • User accounts that have non-ASCII characters in the name will be treated as an absence of user account (i.e. your saves will go into global).
  • Startup loading takes a long time. Depends on the SD you're using, for me it takes around 00:40 on the black screen with a total of 01:30 to get to the main menu with Morrowind GOTY.
  • Startup times can be decreased by packing loose files into a BSA archive. See this post for an example of how to do that.

Some notes:
  • You have to run this from either NSP hbmenu or from a game override. Applet mode does not offer enough memory.
  • The game will start with a black screen. You have to wait at this point. This can take up to 3 minutes (see above bug).
  • Press MINUS to bring up the software keyboard when an input field is selected.
  • Click LSTICK to enable/disable gamepad cursor control.
  • This has only been tested with the English release of Morrowind GOTY Edition, without any mods.
  • Mods should probably work, however you'll have to either edit your openmw.cfg manually or use openmw-launcher on PC, then copy the config file over.
  • The port is bundled with a performance-tuned config file (/switch/openmw/default/settings-base.cfg). Feel free to play around with that or /switch/openmw/config/settings.cfg to find out a better compromise between performance and quality.
  • If you somehow avoid selecting a user account, your saves will go into /switch/openmw/data/global.
  • If the game crashes, check /switch/openmw/fatal.log and /switch/openmw/config/openmw.log.

Got this going today. It's funny to be impressed by something that is still a little bit worse than OG Xbox performance on the same game (most of the shortfall is the keyboard popup bug) But I am nonetheless impressed.

A few items for those who follow. The OP is not completely updated. If you're on a newer Switch FW, you want the rebuild rather than the version linked in the OP (newest I could find): https://gbatemp.net/download/openmw-v2-recompile.37102/

The long initial load time problem many complain of is indeed fixable by combining many of the plentiful tiny files, which create long initial load times, into one bsa archive, https://gbatemp.net/threads/openmw-for-switch.540250/page-13#post-8694765. My initial load time is <30 seconds.

To expound on that linked example, if like me you are using openmw.cfg rather than morrowind.ini:

Use bsapack.exe to create archive.bsa
- in a new folder, put {Icons, Meshes, Textures folders} from a working pc openmw installation's "Data Files" folder along with the {bsapack.exe}
- in a Windows command prompt, navigate (cd) to the new folder
- run the following command without brackets {bsapack pack archive.bsa}
- edit the openmw.cfg file, adding the following line without brackets {fallback-archive=archive.bsa}
- put the edited openmw.cfg onto the Switch SD card as instructed by the OP
- put the created archive.bsa file in the Switch SD /data/ directory as instructed by the OP/previous link, and omit the PC install's icons, meshes, and textures folders on the Switch SD card (which the archive is a substitute for)

After that, once you have the (other) files added to your Switch SD card as instructed in the OP, you're installed.

As a reminder, you can't run this software in applet mode, if you're using hbmenu, the way to launch hbmenu (and ultimately openmw) in regular, not-applet mode is to hold R while launching a game (rather than the photo album). From there you can launch openmw.

New user issues I noticed once the game was going: the onscreen keyboard pops up whenever there is an entry field, which includes potentially manipulating any item quantity larger than one. It's a pain in the ass. And it's also a distraction. A short press of the B button will close it, but a long press of the B button will likely close the thing you're trying to manipulate. I got a better feel for the timing as my rage simmered.

When starting a new game and entering your character name, you're going to get that popup, and worry nothing is going to work. That's because *that* keyboard that's popping up is a stupid bug, and the way to access the *real* keyboard that works is by pressing minus (-) once you have a blinking cursor in the field in which you want to type. Do that to enter your character name. This same technique involving the 'real' keyboard applies for creating a save file (which you may be initially mystified about).

From there, enjoy so-far entirely playable TES 3: Morrowind on your Switch.

With any luck, we'll have an updated build that squishes the keyboard popup bug soon.

EDIT: Played a few hours, one additional bug to report: the sound cuts out entirely after a significant period of play. Has happened to me twice. It's just the sound from openmw. The accursed virtual keyboard (from the bug) still makes its noises. Just save and restart openmw to clear it up.
