If he has been keeping his SysNAND clean and away from CFW/homebrew, restoring a NAND backup before going online isn't necessary.

There are multiple tools for dumping the NAND. The ReiNX toolkit is currently the fastest ranging from 20 to 30 minutes while Hekate takes at least an hour. SX OS I've heard has an option to dump the NAND but I've never seen anyone use it or report how long it takes. Restoring the NAND is also done with Hekate which takes the same time as whatever you dumped.

I've posted this on another thread but I guess this is a better place to share my experience;

I've been using SXOS without emunand since this whole scene started back in 2018 I've never even installed Choidujour and all my titles are updated through Nintendo, I just never played online while on CFW and I buy games from time to time from eshop, maybe this matters.... All I can say is that my Nintendo online services are just as fine as the day I bought it.

I'm not telling anyone to be this careless, I'm just saying my personal experience and that this Nintendo ban is really subjective afaik.

Edit: I've never updated/installed any .nsp aside the one's I bought. I rely solely on .xci

Alright my setup is done, everything is working fine thx to Draxzelex.
I installed all my cartridge games, DLC and updates on OFW intern memory.
After that, I installed the CFW (EmuNAND) and all the homebrew stuff on my sd card.

I use 90DNS with Incognito so I can bypass error code 2123-0011 when trying to launch any game. Also I never willingly connected to Nintys Servers except for the Internet Connection Test servers. Only connected to the Internet once and then only with 90DNS and/or Incognito.

From my experience Hekate and SX OS take roughly the same amount of time for dumping and restoring NAND, the programs might be similar to some degree.

I'm not even sure these days emuNAND / "clean NAND" or whatever is needed to remain unbanned. Why ? Because all CFW blanks out logs and nothing about logs is sent to Nintendo.
As long as you dont go online with a pirated copy or boot OFW, everything that is sent should be relatively safe. AFAIK there is no "hidden" telemetry others than the logs themselves (that are not sent to begin with).

This would explain why lately we have little bans, cuz new CFW blocks logs, not like before...

Ok I've been reading a lot of conflicting info about bans. The biggest conflict I've noticed is to do with logs and clean nand.
Clean nand would mean a nand that is backed up, before touching online functionality and custom firmware.
Logs would be the data sent to Nintendo and stored locally on the switch.

Now I have a hypothetical scenario:
1. Clean nand on 3.0 made. (connected to Nintendo network prior)
2. Upgrade to 8.x via cfw.
3. Use cfw but don't go online.
4. Restore clean nand, and use it to go online.

This scenario is fine, but now:
5. Want to use cfw. Backup nand before using cfw?

The main thing that puzzles me is if we use stock/clean nand online, then use cfw, then restore clean nand to go online, isn't it the same as clearing the logs? Or same as having modified logs as the last time the switch connects online, its logs will not be matched with the clean nand backup.

Or do we need to make a clean nand backup everytime prior to using cfw?

The issue with clearing logs is that it only cleared error logs. By doing that, the rest of the system can detect logs were cleared. A NAND backup resets both the logs and the rest of the system so that it doesn't detect logs were cleared. An analogy you can use to help understand is that clearing error logs is trying to clean up a mess but leaving some remnants behind while restoring the NAND is similar to turning back time.

Clearing logs on a cfw doesn't really clean your switch from cfw use. All your activities, tickets, and installed games can still get detected by nintendo if you try to go online. Restoring a clean nand basically is a time machine for your switch and it brings you back before you got to use a cfw. It also clears every traces of cfw use which makes it the safest way to go back to ofw and play online.

So if I'm gathering this right, the logs are irrelevant and it's mainly not leaving traces of cfw usage before continuing online usage. Trying to clear the logs is only going to show signs of it being tampered with as it can't wipe all traces.

Then, being on ofw 8.x playing online. Restoring nand to clean 3.x and updating backup to 8.x ofw and playing online is assumed as safe due to no cfw trace.

I'm very curious to read the finer details if I could be redirected towards a technical write up. Mainly I'm curious (and might attempt with my own switch) what happens if I factory reset a "dirty nand" backup and use it as a base. I have a 3.x nand backup that I made after I had tinkered with pegaswitch to run homebrew launcher. It crashed a few times too setting up pegaswitch usually.

I have yet to be banned, waiting on emunand.
