Nintendo Scaling Back Wii Production

The Nintendo Wii may have sold a shed-load of units over the past few weeks but reports from Japan indicate that even this increase in revenue is unlikely to completely turnaround the machine's flagging fortunes.

A report issued by Japanese news firm Nikkei has revealed that two Japanese companies involved with the production of the Wii - Mitsumi and Hosiden - are set to lose revenue this year due to the "declining fortunes" of Nintendo's console and a "drop-off in orders from Nintendo to assemble game systems".

The problem facing Nintendo is that pretty much everyone that wants a Wii now has one; the arrival of big titles like New Super Mario Bros. Wii and the forthcoming Zelda may change that but for now it would seem that the Wii has reached the peak of its rise to fame and fortune and the next year or so is going to see sales diminish - at least that's what Nintendo believes, judging by this news.

Another possible reason could be the development of "Wii HD". After all, Nintendo has already released four different hardware iterations of the DS, so surely another Wii is on the cards?

Sony is releasing the new motion controller next year, and announced ALL PS3 systems will work with 3D technology by 2011. They also just hit the launch price of the PS2 this year. With maybe 4-5 price cuts more to go before the next system. If anyone is going to not be releasing a new system, its sony. Nintendo will need it if it wants to maintain the crazy profits they were making, but they likely will just suck the wii dry of all its worth before the next system. Microsoft is completely re-launching the xbox 360 with their natal controller. Both MS and Sony are going to be bundling their new controllers with all systems for next holiday season.

In otherwords, don't hold your breathe for new consoles anytime soon. Closest chance is Wii HD, but i doubt nintendo cares.

i think the main reason that nintendo is scaling back the wii productions in japan is rather the fact that the mayority of people there already own a wii than that they are already working on their next console to replace the wii, also because the rumours about the release of the next ninty console in next year were already demented from first hand:. the success might be just that great that the maximum of possible purchases is nearly going to be reached, also because with the release of the black wii edition just accelerated and increased the purchases once more:.

Well as far as from researching the N64 (Which IMHO this was the highlight of Nintendo) and Gamecube, these consoles lasts from 5-6 years. If the Wii is going to be replace soon then it will be around 2011-2012. The only reason I can see the Wii being replace sooner is because of the economy, not many have money to buy the Wii so they are most likely to buy a PS2 which doesn't cost that.

nah they dont have to make another one actually though they might consider a newer version
the wii is pretty much sold esp since newer games LIKE to come out on the X and 3...
nintendo rose too fast, now it has to wait for the other consoles to catch up but also has probs due to its lower console ability
