Nintendo is remaking Super Mario RPG

Nintendo is reviving the very first Mario RPG. In a style very reminiscent of the original, Nintendo is giving Super Mario RPG a full remake, with a trailer that shows off beloved moments from the game with a fresh new look. Mario, Peach, Bowser, and yes, Geno, are back. The game launches on November 17, 2023.

I must be a real old boomer because I never see the appeal of these things. It looked fine on SNES to me and improved graphics and HD remakes never get me excited. The only time I even care is if they make a significant change to the art style like the remake of Star Ocean 2 or Live a Live. In those cases I am excited to play with the new art direction but most of the new HD remakes and especially remasters are kind of pointless to me.

This remake looks sick as hell, although I will agree with some of the posters above that I prefer the crunchier artstyle of the original. At least they didn't ruin the animations or anything, because generally speaking, overanimation is what can SERIOUSLY kill the look and feel of the original game when it comes to remakes like this.

Quick sidenote: The current box art on Amazon is the most marketing placeholder shit I have ever seen in my life, good god. Like, even Ultra Smash's placeholder art feels more inspiring than this, probably because it has like, an actual background and action pose. Come on, what's the point of even having a placeholder if it's gonna be THIS bland?

Wait WHAT? They remade Live a Live? How did I not know about this?

Not a great game, it's actually mediocre. We didnt get this in England so I'm not clouded by nostalgia.

Paper Mario 1 & 2? The first 3 Mario and Luigi games? So much better! They would make far better remakes and are far more solid RPGs. Even Mario and Luigi 2!

True story, it's all been fact checked several times order. I do appreciate if others disagree, though if they are wrong. Very wrong. So wrong that they're overloaded with wrongness byt I won't hold it against them, even though they are wrong.

Right?
Geno is a shit character. Admit it, this has been certified by genius scientists and scholars.

yall im torn... ive been hacking away at tales of phantasia GBA (the USA version) and have so many documents of reverse engineering i've done
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
I just found out that the EU version is better in literally every way, better sound quality, better lighting, and there's even a patch someone made to make the text look nicer
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
Do I restart now using what i've learned on the EU version since it's a better overall experience? or do I continue with the US version since that is what ive been using, and if someone decides to play my hack, it would most likely be that version?
  • Sicklyboy @ Sicklyboy:
@TwoSpikedHands, I'll preface this with the fact that I know nothing about the game, but, I think it depends on what your goals are. Are you trying to make a definitive version of the game? You may want to refocus your efforts on the EU version then. Or, are you trying to make a better US version? In which case, the only way to make a better US version is to keep on plugging away at that one ;)
  • Sicklyboy @ Sicklyboy:
I'm not familiar with the technicalities of the differences between the two versions, but I'm wondering if at least some of those differences are things that you could port over to the US version in your patch without having to include copyrighted assets from the EU version
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
@Sicklyboy I am wanting to fully change the game and bend it to my will lol. I would like to eventually have the ability to add more characters, enemies, even have a completely different story if i wanted. I already have the ability to change the tilemaps in the US version, so I can basically make my own map and warp to it in game - so I'm pretty far into it!
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
I really would like to make a hack that I would enjoy playing, and maybe other people would too. swapping to the EU version would also mean my US friends could not legally play it
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
I am definitely considering porting over some of the EU features without using the actual ROM itself, tbh that would probably be the best way to go about it... but i'm sad that the voice acting is so.... not good on the US version. May not be a way around that though
