Nintendo applied for patent of a new dual screen console

Back on November 2022, Nintendo applied for a patent of a new dual screen console.

The document abstract reads:

This electronic apparatus comprises a first device and a second device. The first device and the second device can be detachably attached to each other. The first device has a first surface, and a first display and a first connection unit which are positioned on the first surface. The second device has a second surface, a second display that is positioned on the second surface, a second rear surface that is on the reverse side from the second surface, and a second connection unit that is positioned on the second rear surface. The second connection unit can be connected to the first connection unit in a first orientation or in a second orientation that is the reverse from the first orientation. When in a first connection state in which the second connection part has been connected to the first connection part in the first orientation, the second rear surface is positioned so as to cover the first display. When in a second connection state in which the second connection part has been connected to the first connection part in the second orientation, the second rear surface is positioned so as not to cover the first display.

So unlike, the DS, 3DS and their iterations, this design represents a device with a fully detacheable second screen that can be reatached in different positions.

Nintendo has a history of patent unreleased products, but given a console follow up to the Switch be imminent, may at least give an indication of the design idea behind it.

Nintendo has been overprotective of online player communications over fear of parents feeling that their consoles are unsafe to buy and leave them alone with their kids.

This is just Nintendo being Nintendo. Right before they reveal a new system they file a load of patents to throw people off the scent. For instance anyone remember a few months before the Switch was shown off they patented this weird controller.

And then not long after that they patented this

I wouldn't get any hopes up. They release these patents publicly often because they're likely no longer planning on it and just decided to be released public. If any sort of patent would come out for a new console, it would be AFTER the new console is released.

Dunno is they are, but has been a successful formula for Nintendo. The DS is their biggest selling console ever and the second ever of anyone. And at the 12th place also overall is the 3DS and at the 16th, is the Game & Watch.

I don't think they do it strictly to throw people off the scent. Many of these patents are probably genuine ideas they have that they end up leaving on the proverbial cutting room floor.

I honestly wouldn't be shocked if this happened and they pushed for DS/3DS subscription services. Nintendo got a lot of shit for dropping 3DS support.
