I doubt anyone here could give you any semblance of an answer to that because if such a thing were to exist at some point, it would be without any kind of involvement from the translation-team.

They do not own the game and therefor it would be a crime for them to distribute it.

Chinese companies however still do reproductions of games, but they do not own the rights to do so either.

Copyright law in china is simply very lax compared to the western world.
I see. I would imagine it isn't very legal. I remember there being quite a few SNES fan translation reproductions, so I thought maybe there's a chance.

It's always illegal to distribute someone else's work and then make money off of it.
Those criminals may go after older games, because the consider the risk of lawsuits minimal, but i could hardly comment on any of that.

If however you actually want something nice and physical to go along with the fantranslation, then why not buy the actual original game?
The packaging and book are very beautiful and make for a wonderful "conversation-starter".

I will buy it, otherwise I'll feel bad playing it. I can't even play digital games, cause I don't feel like I own them.

I agree with what KingpinSlim is saying about questions of legality. We won't ever be making any physical copies of the game cartridge, and we don't have any immediate plans to translate the box art or the book. That said, if you want something physical to go with the game, you could certainly make a printed color copy of the PS3 PDF, which is fairly easy to find online. It isn't 100% aligned with the DS ROM (maps are different in places, and so on) but it will be a physical thing related to the game that you could certainly make yourself. I did that when I first started the translation project, just to compare the two books, and I like having both of them around.

By now a complete boxed copy starts at 30€ with free shipping from Japan. Half a year ago it started at around 20€.
It is still very affordable, but since more people are becoming aware of the game the prices are slowly going up.
I think this is a trend and, imho, they will rise once again by the time the translation releases.
The same thing was true for Mother 3, which now stands at around 50€ in box, with a high chance of getting a fake.
but... like i said. This is just how i see it as a console collector. I might just be completely wrong.

Well, I had a very productive couple of weeks off of work, including quite a few naps, hanging out with friends and family, playing board games, and having fun with my husband and brother playing The Last Guardian and a bit of World of Final Fantasy together on my brother's PS4. It was a lovely bit of time away from my job.

I also managed to make a significant amount of progress on the game translation without alienating everyone I know. Huzzah!

Updated stats:
Text: 95.81% of the text translated (+15.79% since last update; still 1400 blocks of text, plus maybe an additional 700 as a stretch goal if we decide to translate some bonus content that I didn't even know was there when I played the game in Japanese.)
Edited: 13.49% (not moving noticeably, but we're narrowing our focus to areas that were translated before all the terms were nailed down so the % done is not accurate for what we'll consider a release-ready text)
Graphics: 99.9% 'shopped (only one tricky image left to go, and then we have to check everything in-game to make sure there are no subtle glitches after image import)

So, what does 95% done translation mean? It is the entire story from start to final cutscene. I still need to translate 3 DLC quests and the associated "here's why you're doing this quest" context dialogs, as well as all of the Item and Imagen descriptions and some post-game things like the Moya Tower and a few other NPC conversations after you beat the game. We need to fix the 113 strings that our script has identified as being too long, and then we need to do a few cycles of playtest & bug fix using only the English PS3 PDF for reference (since that is what we'll be asking players to do).

I feel like our playtest cycle is going to take a month or two, especially when you keep in mind that a playthrough is likely to take around 60 hours, but that we can use some of our save files to jump to certain areas to check on specific bug fixes. We do have the ability to use cheat codes in emulators to start with a max HP / MP set of characters, we won't need to do any level grinding to beat any bosses, so that might shave some time off of playthroughs, but... who knows.

This is a huge progress update, and I'm incredibly pleased to say that the end is definitely in sight. This time last year - hell, even August 2016 I felt like we might never finish this, but it is definitely possible now. We're going to make sure that our editing and playtesting and bugfixing all are given the same level of care that the rest of the process has been given, so please don't expect a release before the end of January, probably not even February.

I'll post another progress update once all of the remaining text has been translated, but the Imagen and Item description text is going to be super tedious and annoying because there isn't much space for the text to appear on screen and the descriptions are quite long in Japanese, so we'll have to edit it a few times to get it right, I'm betting.

you worked a lot while you still found time to play and be with your family.
I hope the amount of translated text done here didn't affect quality.

Take your time for the next step, editing and play through. Don't hurry too much, we better have a nice and working game, than some bugs needing urgent patches.

Hi ! NOOB question here... i have a N3DSXL and planing to buy the game once this project is done. i just wanted to know if it is possible to apply the patch on my console ?? and i really dont have the plan to CFW my unit nor use sky3ds. is it possible ?

No. Not in any way shape or form.
Not with the limitations you are specifying.

Anyway... You can either use an emulator to play it on pc or use a flashcart to play it on any console from Nintendo DS up to NEW3DS, but without a flashcart or a CFW you will not be able to play it.

As KingpinSlim said, I don't think it is possible to patch the original cartridge. At least, I am not aware of a way to do that.

We have some playtesters using the DeSMuME emulator, and others using some form of flash cart (R4/etc). We strongly encourage you to support the Japanese game by buying a copy even if you can't read the Japanese because it supports Level5, who spent their R&D money to develop this awesome game in the first place. But, to play the game you will need to patch an existing ROM file.

We will include links to the patch and to instructions on how to use it once the patch is ready for prime time. That looks like it won't be for another couple of months at the earliest, assuming we don't find many major issues during playtesting.

Only way to play translated version of Ni no Kuni on real NDS is flashcart or emulator.
Yeah, and of the two I would recommend flash cart if you have the option. There is a lot of precision drawing that you'll need to do in this game, and I suck at drawing with a mouse into the emulator.

You could also start a game in an emulator so that you can use cheats, and then once you've got a save file you can move it over to a cart with a save file converter.

Other than drawing a lot, though, both experiences should be fine. One of our members has done some extensive tests on a variety of emulators and we'll make sure we have a list of ones that we have tried it out on. So far, Drastic and Desmume seem to be our team's faves, but others do work.

You may want to refocus your efforts on the EU version then. Or, are you trying to make a better US version?
