Gaming New Hardware Or Laptop

I haven't played PC games much since like 4 years ago and now I realllly want to because of borderalnds, call of duty, etc. Here are my specs so far can people help me what to upgrade and what to? (Pirces please and if so can there be a cheap ones and a good one comparasion(not too expensive))

Microsoft Windows XP Professional (5.1, something 2600)
Intel Pentium 4 CPU 2.60GHz (2 CPUs)
1536MB RAM
973MB Something, 1183MB Something
DirectX 9.0c

Or, whats a very good Laptop/notebook, w/e you want to call them thats really good for gaming? Under $1000 Would be great

well I would consider a complete new build with keeping some parts like optical disc drives

a P4 2,6 Ghz is quite slow also that motherboard is most likely to not be a socket 775 one and even if it is I guess it won't support anything dual core

I wouldn't recommend a laptop for anything serious gaming

    Or when your player dies, you can say in code, if enemy exists, do nothing, but if enemy does not exist, then create enemy at certain spot. (This would be a pain tho for lots of emeies)
