Netflix to produce a live-action Dragon's Lair movie starring Ryan Reynolds

header (3).jpg

Remember Dragon's Lair? Originally released as a 1983 arcade game, it was later ported to many other platforms throughout the decades, and most recently, on current generation consoles. Ever since the 1980s, talks of a movie adaptation have been discussed, but never ended up panning out, at least, until a successful Indiegogo campaign managed to secure enough money to greenlight a film based on the series. Now, Netflix has just grabbed the rights to the movie, which will be produced by original creator Don Bluth, and will star Ryan Reynolds, of Detective Pikachu and Deadpool fame. According to an exclusive report by the Hollywood Reporter, two writers from The LEGO Movie, Dan and Kevin Hageman, will be involved in writing the script for the Dragon's Lair movie as well.

Wasn't Bluth making an animated movie for this? I seem to recall a Kickstarter or something for it.

EDIT: And how do you make this into a movie? The tons of death animations was the charm of the game. I guess you could have him able to keep respawning so he can keep dying in different ways and slowly learning each time how to progress through the castle.

I don't know how to feel about this in all honesty ... considering the original pitch and plan was to have an animated movie and given Don Bluth's style and talent for animation i really think we have missed out on something very special
Had to comment on the guinea avatar...love it.

There was a short lived cartoon that was short lived because how expensive the animation was.

There was also a Space cartoon.

Animation is expensive that was just the general rule until computers came in and changed a lot of it. This is one of the reasons Disney moved completely away from hand drawn cell animation.

Compare the show animation quality to any other show in the eighties. It was really expensive even compared to other shows that got canceled due to the animation being too expensive like the Dungeon and Dragons cartoon.

Heck the show quality was so good it looks almost the same as the Arcade game, if with a less slutty princess.

For comparison here is Dragon's Lair Atract Mode.

It's Don Bluth what do you expect the man is an animation genius? Just look at the work he did when he was at disney you can instantly pick out his animation style in an instant. He doesn't generally shortcuts, its the time, love and dedication he but in to each single movie that shines through. Go take a look at Don's All Dogs Go to Heaven and compare the animation style to All Dogs Go to Heaven 2 . It's much cheaper, much less polish nowhere near as much soul put in to it and gernerally bad looking although they were working from the same character sheets. Also look at the Land before time compared to its sequels the difference is remarkable.
