Even though Im really careful, one time I got a virus that took all my admin privileges away from my own laptop. It changed my desktop into an advert for an anti virus program that cost $30. I had to reformat. I could imagine some n00b buying that anti virus in the hope of getting rid of the virus. Even though they wouldnt be able to install an anti virus program to their computer.

Last time I ever got a virus, was a while back, and it wasnt even me that put it on/let it on. Im never giving family usage of my admin account, EVER AGAIN.

It was one of those ones that just seemed to keep replicating and replicating. It changed my DNS to point to all these ads. And hijacked explorer, tried to keep reaching some server. Drove me nuts, as it wouldnlt let most anti-malware tools run. Eventually just renamed all the anti-malware progs (as the virus blocked by filenames it seemed) ran HijackThis, CMBFix, and MBAM, but still hung in there.

Eventually booted into Linux and deleted all the virus files

. Linux is a life saver.

Then repated the above and all good

i had antivirus 08 when it would only let me use the internet then i tried to boot into safe mode and failed then windows wouldn't load up any more so i did a full wipe and installed ubuntu (linux) and haven't had a virus
i'll get one soon since i just installed windows with ubuntu dual-booting so i'll change what my worst was in like two days when i get it

btw do you guys all use firefox ? I got vundo with it I think, i could'nt open firefox when I was infected
Not really a reason to stop using it but all this reminded me of google chrome
Anyone like the speed of that browser ? It just opens instantly, tabs too

As a result, I've never had a virus. Ever. (I started on Linux before I got Internet access)

should that not read I've never had a virus. YET!

yes LINUX is good but even LINUX has Virii too!

to say that you have not had one EVER does not mean to say you WONT!

to add .... there's nothing to stop you getting a virus and it jumping ship to a usb stick and infecting a windows machine its shared/used on ...or it even jumping through your network to another machine that's running windows or using your LINUX box as a server!

Linux versions of antivirus programs are no doubt designed for this purpose in mind

The likelihood of getting a virus on Linux is practically zero. I only run my package manager as root, so a virus couldn't do anything of consequence anyway. Plus, I only execute code from the Arch Repositories, or compiled myself from trusted sources. The only viruses I could feasibly be affected by were any cross-platform ones (like, javascript, or something).

And with regards to spreading: I'm not fussed at all if a virus I got from a Windows machine in one of my files on my USB stick gets transferred to another Windows machine, causing mayhem for them. In fact, serves them right for insufficiently protecting their inherently insecure OS.

It isn't just about Viruses existing, it's about the OS' inherent security. Linux has a lot of that, while Windows has relatively little (although this is marginally improving).

Wow. Just wow. It's arrogant people like you who give Linux users a bad name.

Oh come on, it's hardly arrogant. In the hypothetical scenario, is is *their* fault for not maintaining an effective security system. I'm not suggesting that I would actively virus people's Windows boxes; I just wouldn't bat an eyelid if someone's was virused. And I don't see why a user should install software on their machine to protect other isolated machines running on different operating systems.

Every week 3-5 Trojans/Viruses (P2P...-.-)..so always the same viruses...nothing realy dangerous..at least this is what my Free Avira Antivirus shows...I always belive that I have more, my Vista is so damm slow
tongue.gif
. Anyways, I delete them immediately...

And even if I would have some, they wouldn't live longer than a month...I nuke my Laptop at least one time per month
tongue.gif
. And like others said..there's Linux to safe you (from Viruses and Windows).

This.

Linkiboy: In my first post in the thread I did clearly say that a Windows machine configured correctly was as secure as people need. And people who through their incompetence leave their systems open to infection via USB drive frankly deserve what is clearly coming to them. They shouldn't expect anything more than being told to have secured themselves. So I don't think I'm being arrogant at all.

Mine was about 2 years ago, I downloaded a KeyGen for a program and my stupid ass forgot to scan it before I opened it, and BAM! Tons and tons of viruses! We reformated the computer like 2 days later and haven't had to reformat it or clean it up since, I am a lot smarter now.

I got this nasty virus which slows down my comp + disables my access to my D: partition.

It is a pain in the arse. I trakced it down for the a whole week, and I managed to directly remove it from my PC. By deleting the files.

Of course, my PC failed to boot. and I have to re-install. Wonder why I didn't do it sooner...

I don't think I've ever gotten anything serious. The worst I got was me doing something stupid and went to someone's sig link and turned off popup blocker, since it was messing with my downloads. And it was youareanidiot.org(don't go, I'm warning you), of course I thought it was a small joke. You close one popup, if you could catch it, and 3 more pop up. But I got rid of them. But nothing else ever happened to me! Many torrents and romsites, and nothing. DVDs and anime and more, nothing.
