It seems that the feds did a shakedown to scare the modding community. They went after big and small time sellers\modders. A moderator from xbox-scene (FallsInc) was one of them, he sold a chipped wii to an undercover agent. People have to be careful on who you help out, you might end up just like him.

@martin- AFAIK, mod-chips are not illegal in Canada, Australia, and many other countries. The U.S. and our "good buddies," the U.K., have very strict (moronic) laws against them.

You should be fine ordering one now still. But that said, it's not really ever going to be a giant threat. Even if we can't get wiikeys anymore, we can always still get unprogrammed eeproms and make a programmer and do everything ourselves. It's really not that much harder if you think about it (especially if you throw the rebuilding of the legs into the equation.. it becomes barely an extra step at all). And in the end, it'd have cost about the same as a wiikey if not possibly cheaper even. That and you might even get it sooner than waiting on shipment from canada.

There is no specific law targeting modchips in the U.S. However, according to the DMCA, any device which assists in the circumvention of a copy protection mechanism is illegal to own or sell. This is the law these people are using when they raid modchip sellers.
