    - The US Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency announced it has executed the largest crackdown on game piracy, illegal mod chips and game copying devices, 32 federal search warrants in 16 states have been served against suspects involved in direct importation, installation, sale and distribution that are foreign manufacture and smuggled into the states.

It seems that the feds did a shakedown to scare the modding community. They went after big and small time sellers\modders. A moderator from xbox-scene (FallsInc) was one of them, he sold a chipped wii to an undercover agent. People have to be careful on who you help out, you might end up just like him.

Arrggghhhh!! Love your grammar Rock. [IMG]

@martin- AFAIK, mod-chips are not illegal in Canada, Australia, and many other countries. The U.S. and our "good buddies," the U.K., have very strict (moronic) laws against them.

Shit, Will this affect me buying a Wiikey? If I order it now, will I get a nice letter in the mail by Uncle Sam saying they ripped open my package and feel I should be punished???.......

Since 2000 when the DMCA was implemented by a contemptable fuckwit Congress of no-account shitstains that collectively didn't understand enough about technology to log onto AOL let alone legislate the future.

You should be fine ordering one now still. But that said, it's not really ever going to be a giant threat. Even if we can't get wiikeys anymore, we can always still get unprogrammed eeproms and make a programmer and do everything ourselves. It's really not that much harder if you think about it (especially if you throw the rebuilding of the legs into the equation.. it becomes barely an extra step at all). And in the end, it'd have cost about the same as a wiikey if not possibly cheaper even. That and you might even get it sooner than waiting on shipment from canada.

In the UK modchips are as legal as a UK without fish and chip shops. [IMG]

It would seem they are in America or its the ESA doing yet another unconstitutional thing and getting away with it. Fucking arseholes cracking down on perfectly legal things. Fuck them, and fuck Nintendo right now. Nintendo have got to get their priorities straight, cause they are going to alienate their customers.

There is no specific law targeting modchips in the U.S. However, according to the DMCA, any device which assists in the circumvention of a copy protection mechanism is illegal to own or sell. This is the law these people are using when they raid modchip sellers.
