Microsoft seems to be stepping up its game regarding mixed reality. Literally.

During GDC 2017, the company announced its plans concerning mixed reality and there's something in it for console gamers too:

We’re also excited to share that Windows Mixed Reality experiences will light up on other devices over time, beyond desktop and Microsoft HoloLens. Our plan is to bring mixed reality content to the Xbox One family of devices, including Project Scorpio, in 2018.

This appears to be Microsoft's direct take on the PSVR, with a twist. How do you reckon it will fare?

It's either going to be overly expensive and not sell well, or be inexpensive and provide a sub-par experience with low FoV and other issues. Not to mention Scorpio already costs more money than anyone should bother spending on Microsoft products.

Steam hardware survey: 0.3% of installations have a VR device attached (at time of scan). Not great.
By comparison, 44% of installations have a primary display resolution of exactly 1920x1080 (of Windows installations only).
How do you reckon it will fare?
The same. Not great.

We don't have enough information to predict it well at this time. The other information you'd need is hardware launch price. That said, I don't see it working. Even if the hardware price is only $200, they will need fun games too or no one will buy it.

Mixed Reality is used both as "advanced AR" and a term that umbrellas the combination of AR and VR, so it depends on who's using it.

I think in the long run, all mix reality (AR + VR) devices will be one and the same, but for now, although VR has more traction now, AR will be the one with bigger traction in the short term.

If they start bundling these with most of their laptops, that will surely help adaption.
