Microsoft Lying About Sales of Xbox 360?

According to reports, there may be some truth in speculation that MS is lying about sales of the Xbox 360. Recently, they claimed that 10 million units of the 360 were sold in the USA this year, however, NPD stats total at around 4.7 million for the year!

That number comes from a Microsoft statement released in the wake of NPD’s December and 2009 report which reads: “In 2009 US Xbox 360 console sales topped 10m units, with more than 1.3m sold in December, contributing to a worldwide Xbox 360 install base of 39m.”

However, eagle-eyed MCV readers have pointed out that this number seems very much at odds with NPDs own numbers.

Though NPD has not released concrete 2009 figures, adding together the Xbox 360 sales from each of the firm’s monthly reports from 2009 comes to a total of 4.7m – less than half of Microsoft’s claimed amount.

Sales might not be that high because of all the money you have to put into it to make it the best online experience, really $100 just for a WiFi adapter, $150 just for a 120GB HDD, $50 for Gold Live, and downloads are quite a bit. Even with those prices I still like my Xbox 360 the most of the 3 main consoles lol.

Would you rather trust sales results from a company who does the sales or from a non-biased, third party. You can't take anything Microsoft proclaims about the 360 without a grain of salt. Same goes for Sony and Nintendo and their respective systems.

Im pretty sure MS mean 10 million worldwide, the sentence makes more sense that way seeing as how they mention the total worldwide sales. Just a simple mistake or misunderstanding probably.

Isn't that common knowledge? I wouldn't go as far that the 360 doesn't have any exclusives, but let's face it: Halo and Gears of War are the most important 360 exclusives. The last Halo game (at least the last one by Bungie) will be released this year, the next Gears of War will be released on the next generation Xbox. At the same time, the PS3 is getting games like Uncharted 2; instant GOTYs. And Heavy Rain, MAG etc. are not even out yet.

Edit: this post sounds like it's really anti-360. I don't like the 360, but I don't mean it like that and don't wantto start a flame-war or something.
