Microsoft launches new all-digital Xbox One S edition next month

While we look to the future of what both Microsoft and Sony have up their sleeves for their next console, that doesn't mean that this generation doesn't have anything left to give. Microsoft has announced the Xbox One S All-Digital Edition, which as the name implies, is a version of the system that includes everything except the disc drive. Targeted as a budget model for those that prefer forgoing physical media, the All Digital will retail for $250, a full $50 less than a standard console. It'll also come with three first party games; Sea of Thieves, Minecraft, and Forza Horizon 3. If you're interested, you'll be able to pick up an Xbox One S All-Digital Edition when it releases next month, on May 7th.

could have gone as low as $200 I suppose if they wanted to deal Sony a hard blow?

MS could pretty trivially sell them for $100 even if that meant taking losses if it meant next generation they'd be in a better position for pushing all digital, especially in countries (Germany, UK, and Japan) which seem much more reluctant for such a move.

Other than just waiting for the units system life, and reputation. I don't think its going to be a subject worth talking about. Because its still an xbox 1. At a reduced price curriculum. (That difference. Besides variation in hardware and software sales.) Its always going to be made the same.

A similar instance was made when people started over-stocking PS3 Units. No one ended up buying them until the console price dropped, just like the Vita. And just like with the older un made for the PS3.They because the disc drive was so bad.

The disc drive. Ultimately,
is the true reason to talk about this console. With added features or not.

Much prefer a disc-drive. Use it for my 4k blurays. Disc-less is 50 dollars more expensive where I am, so not sure how that's going to work out for them.

Really, it seems like this is a way for them to make a profit off the console, to ease people into the idea of not owning their games anymore, and to promote their digital services. I mean, it's not a bad move on their part, but it makes me wary of the future.

The worst part is that buying XBL Gold doesn't even remove the ads. It just changes them all to Xbox-related ads. Definitely the worst UI of any console this generation.

the UI feels like it was created by 10 competing committees. and the intern who was transporting all their proposals together, tripped, and accidentally shuffled them all together. Definitely the worst UI of any console I've ever seen.

Its really. Openly ended sideways. Especially with what they are releasing to the public. Its not insulting. There's just no reason to do it. Without adding any extra benefits or smaller versions. Besides giving features included with the console like XBL or XBL Gold.

Besides that residing information. Some games could have been released digitally but they were not. If I want to play a game of Ten-Kiko. Why not just pay and buy for the disc. If it costs less and more affordable. And then with the added benefit of cross-compatibility with xbox360 and original... A beautiful feature by the way. You have that to. But you also lose it.

If you remove the disc drive, increase the hard drive space. Otherwise when you run out of space but don't want to constantly delete/redownload games, you are forced to buy expanded storage anyway.

Id say this might be a good option for a second console where you don't need a second Blu Ray player, but if you already have an XB1 then you probably have some physical copies that this won't run.
If you already have a PS4 then I doubt you'd be in the market for an Xbox One.

My brother has 2 Xbox Ones and buys most of his games physically. Not to collect them, not to sell second hand, he just likes receiving a tangible good in exchange for his money. Plus he and his friends buy eachother games as birthday gifts often and you can't wrap and bow a download unless you broke into Microsoft's data center and burgled the download server.

I never had any interest in purchasing a xbox system and this doesn't help. Sorry, but try again. Funny video, but not funny for my wallet. All digital content is bad idea if there is no reassurance that it will be preserved or remain even after the console is being neglected in favor of newer ones. I don't want to buy a system that could someday be dead just cause the digital store for obtaining software is gone and no disc drive to play disc.

Companies dont want to preserve it on a older platform. This way they can keep selling you the same game over and over again. All digital means all pirated. But im just one of them old people that remember freedom. They cant wait till we are extinct.

And lose potential deals on physical discs? Not even speaking about 2nd hand market.

Not being able to lend games to a friend in need so they can try them out?

Not being able to play 4k blu-ray discs?

What puzzles me the most is that there are people excited about this.

Worst idea ever. No drive means no buy.
Digital only consoles are not good for gamers imo. In addition it's too expensive for a "defect" product. You could buy a used Xbox one s with a defect drive much cheaper than this bullshit :s

  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
Do I restart now using what i've learned on the EU version since it's a better overall experience? or do I continue with the US version since that is what ive been using, and if someone decides to play my hack, it would most likely be that version?
  • Sicklyboy @ Sicklyboy:
@TwoSpikedHands, I'll preface this with the fact that I know nothing about the game, but, I think it depends on what your goals are. Are you trying to make a definitive version of the game? You may want to refocus your efforts on the EU version then. Or, are you trying to make a better US version? In which case, the only way to make a better US version is to keep on plugging away at that one ;)
  • Sicklyboy @ Sicklyboy:
I'm not familiar with the technicalities of the differences between the two versions, but I'm wondering if at least some of those differences are things that you could port over to the US version in your patch without having to include copyrighted assets from the EU version
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
@Sicklyboy I am wanting to fully change the game and bend it to my will lol. I would like to eventually have the ability to add more characters, enemies, even have a completely different story if i wanted. I already have the ability to change the tilemaps in the US version, so I can basically make my own map and warp to it in game - so I'm pretty far into it!
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
I really would like to make a hack that I would enjoy playing, and maybe other people would too. swapping to the EU version would also mean my US friends could not legally play it
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
I am definitely considering porting over some of the EU features without using the actual ROM itself, tbh that would probably be the best way to go about it... but i'm sad that the voice acting is so.... not good on the US version. May not be a way around that though
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
    I appreciate the insight!
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
@TwoSpikedHands just switch, all the knowledge you learned still applies and most of the code and assets should be the same anyway
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
    and realistically they wouldn't

be able to play it legally anyway since they need a ROM and they probably don't have the means to dump it themselves
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
why the shit does the shitbox randomly insert newlines in my messages
  • Veho @ Veho:
It does that when I edit a post.
  • Veho @ Veho:
It inserts a newline in a random spot.

never had that i don't think

do y'all think having an sd card that has a write speed of 700kb/s is a bad idea?
trying to restore emunand rn but it's taking ages... (also when I finished the first time hekate decided to delete all my fucking files )
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
@Karma177 that sd card is 100% faulty so yes, its a bad idea
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
even the slowest non-sdhc sd cards are a few MB/s
  • Karma177 @ Karma177:
@The Real Jdbye it hasn't given me any error trying to write things on it so I don't really think it's faulty (pasted 40/50gb+ folders and no write errors)
