Hacking Memorex DVD-R's not working

i've used memorex discs with over 20 wii's without a single issue from any of them, but then again I also have a top of the line plextor dvd burner, that REALLY makes the difference. Fuck lite-on drives or really any other brands drives out there. They all suck.

not true I always use pioneer pure quality for data, games, music or whatever single or dual layer

Well I can get Zelda to work in Gecko if I try loads of times. I'm burning Dead Rising again at 2x and hopefully it'll be the same.

As I said earlier, you should really update your DVD firmware if you intend to try reburning them again. Some firmware updates helps calibrate the laser more optimally when it's burning data to a dvdr.

My burner's the standard Dell one that came in my Inspiron 6400 laptop and there are no firmware updates for it.

I burned Dead Rising again at 2x (well, ImgBurn says it's actually burning at 3.3x) and it actually works- I played it for 1:21 from the disc channel perfectly fine.

I just don't get what's going on.

I have a Lite-ON, an external DVD-RW unit. It does work OK if you use good media, but you can't get away with the cheap stuff on them, especially for wii games.

Also, try to avoid the "label-less" or "lacquered" discs. They coaster very easily from topside scratches, and wiis have issues with them, particularly if the laser is worn out. I have yet to get a real wii or GC game to run well (read: without errors) on lacquer discs, although SNES9x GX & VBA GX are happy reading ROMs off them.

I have problems with DVD-9 games... and my DL media is memorex.

The Wii can read it via cIOSCORP method and I can even play most of SSBB but MP3 from MPT will DRE before it finishes the intro... This is even with a Wiikey 2.

Perhaps I'll try to burn it on a different brand of DL media.

I use Nero 7 for burning DVDs. I just use "Make data DVD" and add all the ROMs to the root of the disc. The default burn settings are fine, so no clue what FS the disc has.

If you want to use ImgBurn, try making an ISO with something like ISO Recorder (makes ISOs out of a folder of files, freeware), then burning that ISO with ImgBurn.

Are you serious?!

Every brand (actually every model from every different factory) has a different dye put into the discs. This dye pretty much determines how good the discs will be. The darker the purple dye the more it is likely to retain quality for the longest period of time.

As different media have different 'strengths' of dye, I'm sure that burners have different quality lenses etc. Cheaper burners keel over quicker, indicating lower quality components?

That's with your laptop, which more then likely has a better laser in it. Have you tried those disks on a Wii?

I work at a cd/dvd mfg company. Memorex brand dvds fail our tests more than any other brand.

The best brand of dvd-rs is verbatim, ritek, or sony.


trust me when I say memorex is a crappy brand and they wear out your laser faster. you can get better brands for only a little more money.


as far as burners go, I would recommend pioneer and plextor.

My preferred media/burner are Plextor/Verbatim. I don't burn Wii games since I have the HD, but I used to burn xbox games and those always worked the best.

Even Verbatims can fail. I've sworn by Verbatims since the beginning of the CD-R burning days, but I picked up a 100 pack of the "value" Verbatim DVD-Rs last week... I had about 15 Verbatim -R's from a previous spindle, and the new "value" ones are considerably darker. The "label" etching on the front is identical but the dye is different and the serial numbers around the hub are considerably different, obviously different manufacturers. I've gotten read/write errors in DVDFab and the DVD player hits all kinds of freeze points during the few movies I "backed up" with the new discs. The old ones still work fine, and I burn all Wii and movies at 2x-4x, Data and other ISOs at 8-16x. Wound up returning the 100-pack for a 50-pack of Verbatim +R's, will see how they go. I'll still buy other Verbatims besides the current run of 100 pack -R's for awhile, as they're still more trustworthy than most cheap brands.

Burner is a NEC ND-3550, iirc, not the best but has been mostly reliable for a few years now. I'll agree that a combo of a good burner and good media makes the difference and I personally think that burn speed DOES matter.
