I added the missing components to the emulator so it would load the backgrounds that previously appeared black, but that puts a heavy load on the CPU and drastically reduces performance. I'm trying to optimize everything to lower the resource usage and see if I can get it to a playable speed; there's still plenty of room for improvement.

The GameCube has the *Sonic* collections—I'm not sure if it uses Gens, but it does have a Sega Saturn emulator
No it doesn't.

wouldn't it be possible to use part of that code? Since it's built for the GameCube itself, you'd just need to make improvements.
That's not open source code. Not free to use, and not even in source code state.

How about 2D games like Elevator Action, Rayearth and SOTN? on Wii?

I did some tests
System: PAL Wii (CPU-20)
Version: Z-GX 20260815

2do Arukotoha Sand-R (Japan)
full Speed, some missing graphics (sidewalk/floor)

Akumajou Dracula X (Japan, Ultimate V1.1 Paul Met)
black screen, nothing

Baku Baku Animal (USA)
FMV intro distorted (red/green garbage), black screen afterwards

Batman Forever (USA)
black screen after character selection / loading screen

Battle Monsters (USA)
runs full speed, missing skybox

Contra - Legacy of War (USA)
FMV's distorted, character selection screen no movement, missing graphics (street)

Cotton 2 (Japan, T+Eng v0.9)
runs flawlessly

Cotton Boomerang (Japan)
black screen, DSI stack dump

Die Hard Arcade (USA)
horizontally stretched graphics, missing floor graphics, missing sound effects

Linkle Liver Story (T+Eng v1)
black screen, nothing

Mortal Kombat II (Europe)
black screen after 'Midway presents' screen, if start button pressed: main menu is appearing, if button or D-Pad pressed: game freezes (background music continues)

Scorcher (USA)
black screen, nothing

Sega Rally Championship Plus (Japan)
hangs at Sega logo

Shanghai - Triple Threat (USA)
distorted background at title screen, multiple cursors in-game

Shienryu (Japan)
Intro distorted (red garbage), black screen afterwards

Shining Force III - Scenario 1 (USA)
black screen after 'now loading' screen. If start button repeatly pressed, the game is running further to the title screen (only shortly appears), after waiting, the intro video is played back (with red distortion). Only icons and text are visible (sometimes) on blue screen.

Sonic-R (USA)
runs too slow, missing floor graphics

Sonic Wings Special (Japan)
runs flawlessly

Valhollian (Japan, T+Eng v1.3)
very playable, some missing floor graphics in the 3D fight cut-scenes, 2D looks perfect, saving and loading the game did work, but after restarting the Wii, the first information from Valhollian was: "you will not be able to save your progress..." and no option to load the saved game was available.

It seems that loading ISO+CUE is also working fine.

little more testing:

Virtual Kyoutei 2 (Japan)
In-game slow (21 fps) and missing surface (water)

Resident Evil (USA)
Intro FMV's playing (red glitched), freezes afterwards)

Shinrei Jusatsushi Taromaru (Japan)
DSI stack dump after rotating logo

for castlevania you need a hack version translated and modifque menu jpn for english work for me
use Castlevania - Symphony of the Night (Japan) (2M) [T-En by Knight0fDragon v1.021] to work

No it doesn't.
He was thinking of Sonic Gems Collection which does have a port of Sonic R although it's not based on the sega saturn version but rather a recompiled version of the PC port, the telltale sign of that being the lack of geometry fading into view or the rainbow stage looking completely different and much flatter than the saturn version.

I know already, I own the original games. Just saying there's any kind of Saturn emulator there just because Sonic R is there, has no meaning. The port was brought from the technically superior/not limited PC version, which was already a thing almost 3 decades ago. There was no reason at all for Sega to make their development miserable by creating and developing a Saturn emulator back then (a pretty complex feat on itself for too many years) for such a limited console like the Gamecube, as the release was multi-platform, and the Xbox nor the PS2 were PPC.

So, if it existed, what would you do with an extracted copyrighted binary? That's like saying the Zelda emulators inside the Collector's disc could be key to create better N64 emulation.

Brother, we're in the Wii forum :P the origin of taking copyrighted emulators from other games and making them run games they were never intended to run

Brother, making them "run" other games is not the same as "use it and steal it for your own source code as if you could magically make it legal". You should know. You weren't around when ScummVM team took down every single Gamecube/Wii port because it was discovered that libogc was not a "clean room" reverse-engineered project and it uses stolen Nintendo SDK and RTEMS code?

Again, there's no Saturn emulator inside any Gamecube game. That's what's being talked about, and it was clarified.

Didn't they just recently re-add support for Wii/GC support after years of letting those codebranches languish into broken states? Also I don't recall ScummVM doing anything except litigating commercial projects using their code without attribution. I think you're conflating two different events as one thing.

So you were living under a rock, then. Official ScummVM Nintendo Wii builds and archives were removed from the main download pages and buildbots due to to the copyright and licensing controversies surrounding libogc. Same reason why The Homebrew Channel stopped development completely. ScummVM page just recently added them back, for whatever their personal reasons and resolution about the matter.

So will you stop derailing the Z-GX thread for a sterile discussion that you're having with yourself over a Saturn emulator that doesn't exist in the Sonic compilation for Gamecube? Just wondering, because you're not adding absolutely anything going over and over the subject.

You're the one who wanted to "ERM ACKSHUALLY" someone else's post instead of ignoring it :P and you're also adding nothing of value with your knowledge of whatever scummVM is doing, I'm just waiting for the ST-V update to drop :D
