Hello,

I have a Japanese PS2 Slim SCPH-70000 model, and want to play some US games on it.

So, I've been reading about Free Mcboot and have a few questions.

Since I have a slim model, which I heard doesn't run off the hard drive or something like the FAT model does, do I need to use an external SSD?
Or burn the backup game onto a DVD-R disc? The usb stick drives seem to run slow or glitch out on the slim from what I have read. Do I have to have the whole external SSD empty of my other files before putting Free Mcboot onto it? I want to avoid using my SSD just for that purpose if possible.

As far as Memory cards go, I saw a comment saying that the Official Sony 8mb MagicGate cards work best. Perhaps the Mem Card Gen. 2 as well. Just not anything above 8mb.

Any advice would be appreciated! Thanks a lot!

70k CAN have an internal drive via iFlash2PS2 by Arithmus and IDE Resurrector by Gusse. Requires advanced soldering skills though. iFlash takes me about 15min.

Disc backups require Mechapwn (I HATE IT) or modchips. I personally would not use any clone modchips, but it is very hard to find orig 3rd gen modchips. Possible...I have a good collection, but its $$$ and time.

So devices/methods you can load ISOs from worst to best speed wise for your slim:
USB < MX4SIO < MMCE < SMB < UDPBD < IDE soldered solution

Dont get an orig sony memcard unless you can't get an MMCE device like SD2PSX, PSxMemCard Gen2 or MemCard PRO2. MMCE: Multipurpose Memory Card Emulator
The first 2 update firmware from sd2psxtd.github.io
Its "unlimited" memcards, bootcard, and can hold isos on the sd card side. It may be 3rd place, but its only a little slower than CD/DVD but VERY easy to use/setup. Some game video will stutter. ITs a memcard with mini processor in it doing some work.

As far as software: go to PS2 Homebrew Store and grab your exploit. The MMCE exploits have a TON of homebrew ready to go. The 8MB exploits are minimal setups but still good same base.

You would use OPL, NHDDL (neutrino), XEB+ (sync on luma neutrino plugin) or OSD-XMB (OPL or neutrino) to load your isos from.
