What do you recommend to lock the USB stick from writing? I'm having an issue when I connect the drive to other computers that have AV active and it ends up quarantining/removing some of the portable apps.

Is the included free Lockpick tool as good as "Kon-Boot" in that it can boot regardless of password?
PC Ulocker has the ability to bypass a local account password without resetting it, but not sure if it will work on Windows account as I believe Konboot will allow, but you can change the password of local and Windows accounts with it.

So can anybody tell me if there is a utility I can run to set the Medicat USB to "Read only"? I recall this being mentioned in one of the previous 150+ pages but couldn't find it.

I have tried everything, and cannot for the life of me get Kon-boot working properly in Ventoy. So I don't include it. Other tools have the ability to bypass the password and work better, so it's a bit useless and outdated as a modern solution anyways, especially without any UEFI support.

If you have an iODD device and install MediCat to a VHD file, you can lock that as read-only. Otherwise I'm not sure how you'd accomplish that without a hardware switch for Read-Only, which I've only seen on really old USB sticks, and premium ones that offer hardware encryption.

Kon-Boot doesn't include UEFI support??? I'm sure it does as it can beat Windows 10 online logins & is often updated.

is it possible to get medicat onto a USB that will boot to both UEFI AND the old bios systems? If so, please do write how to make it happen. It's been doing my head in all day.

It's on the first page in the spoiler tag of instructions. It's up to YOU to set your BIOS to boot into the correct mode you need.

Thank you for the response, much appreciated!
Just to confirm - will following the instructions on the front page ensure the USB boots to both UEFI and the legacy system? I was under the impression that the legacy system uses MBR, but UEFI uses GPT.

BTW, regarding setting up BIOS to boot into correct mode: newer systems that are being released no longer have an option for legacy USB booting. they're UEFI only. But many of the older systems I use at work don't have UEFI. So yeah, really wanted a single USB device that could be used with any and all PCs.

P.S. KonBoot 3.5 and later support UEFI even with secure boot. I also recall that the 2.7 version definitely had UEFI support.

UEFI can boot from MBR just fine most of the time, but GPT usually gets you better results on newer machines. The release later this May will change over to GPT as the default, going forward. And I'll change the installation guide as needed.

Good night .

Thanks to Jairo for his generosity with the updates and the material.

I downloaded the latest update of medicat 21.03, and I'm having trouble unzipping the files.

Try 7zip and 360 zip.

Here the error.

Anyone have any idea what happens?

Thank you very much for the help.

Files .001, .002, and .003 are not the correct size, you need to download those ones again.

Your PortableApps fder can be dragged over. But from v20 and onward you'll need to make a new drive from v19.xx

  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
yall im torn... ive been hacking away at tales of phantasia GBA (the USA version) and have so many documents of reverse engineering i've done
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
I just found out that the EU version is better in literally every way, better sound quality, better lighting, and there's even a patch someone made to make the text look nicer
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
Do I restart now using what i've learned on the EU version since it's a better overall experience? or do I continue with the US version since that is what ive been using, and if someone decides to play my hack, it would most likely be that version?
  • Sicklyboy @ Sicklyboy:
@TwoSpikedHands, I'll preface this with the fact that I know nothing about the game, but, I think it depends on what your goals are. Are you trying to make a definitive version of the game? You may want to refocus your efforts on the EU version then. Or, are you trying to make a better US version? In which case, the only way to make a better US version is to keep on plugging away at that one ;)
  • Sicklyboy @ Sicklyboy:
I'm not familiar with the technicalities of the differences between the two versions, but I'm wondering if at least some of those differences are things that you could port over to the US version in your patch without having to include copyrighted assets from the EU version
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
@Sicklyboy I am wanting to fully change the game and bend it to my will lol. I would like to eventually have the ability to add more characters, enemies, even have a completely different story if i wanted. I already have the ability to change the tilemaps in the US version, so I can basically make my own map and warp to it in game - so I'm pretty far into it!
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
I really would like to make a hack that I would enjoy playing, and maybe other people would too. swapping to the EU version would also mean my US friends could not legally play it
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
I am definitely considering porting over some of the EU features without using the actual ROM itself, tbh that would probably be the best way to go about it... but i'm sad that the voice acting is so.... not good on the US version. May not be a way around that though
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
    I appreciate the insight!
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
@TwoSpikedHands just switch, all the knowledge you learned still applies and most of the code and assets should be the same anyway
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
    and realistically they wouldn't

be able to play it legally anyway since they need a ROM and they probably don't have the means to dump it themselves
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
why the shit does the shitbox randomly insert newlines in my messages

It does that when I edit a post.

It inserts a newline in a random spot.
