Losing your "last life" in a game?

Ok, so I noticed in some video games, even though all your lives disappear, you still have one last "invisible" life left. Why is this? Thanks!

In some games the number displays your total lives, and in some it displays just your spare lives.

Like how your closet at any given day does not have all your clothes, because you're currently wearing a set.

The counter is how many lives you have stored up. When you are on your last life that means the counter will have 0.

It kinda mean that it shows all the other lives left not in use!

What has already been said, really. It's like the difference between ordinal and cardinal numbers. Also, if you're in a race and you overtake the person in 3rd, which position are you in?
