Best guess for this is a flashcart i didn't ever hear about (see the site above: GEi DSge.ndsi.inLatest: v3.1Updated: 2011)
FirmWare:
http://www.linfoxdomain.com/nintendo/ds/dl.php/GEi_firmware_v1.4.1.rar
Official kernel:
http://www.linfoxdomain.com/nintendo/ds/dl.php/GEi_v3.1_English.rar (this is english version, other languages are available on the site above)
Advised alternative for official kernel (if possible, ask for him modding a direct boot to):

i just installed twilight on it, way better than the original firmware.

I'm having some trouble with the flashcart though, my ds lite isn't recognising it for some reason. It runs on my new 2ds xl fine, the ds lite runs standard cartridges fine too, it just won't recognise the flashcart for some reason.

Sorry to bother you but would you know what to do or be able to point me in the right direction?

Take a flashlight, and a dental hook...
Shine in the ds-lite cartridge slot look for a contact that might be bent different and repossition it with the dental hook.
For if your 2ds works, it can't be your ds-lite software (ds-lite doesn't update security, while 2ds does).
still it's a good idea to do the official firmware update (twilight menu will be the same, just compitablity with 3ds firmware should improve.
Firmware effects hardware and firmware compatibility of your handheld.
Kernel / wood / ysmenu / Twillight Menu++ effects your game compatibility.
Firmware updates are as far as i know limited by the manufacturer of the flashcart unless it can be flashed to work a general R4DSi, but that's mostly not possible due to HWID and unknown IC used in the flashcard.
and it's dangerous for it being flashed wrong can't be undone.
