If its clean i see no reason why it would be bad to update.
I believe they're hoping for some sort firmware specific exploit.

Which honestly, I wouldn't hold my breath for. With the current sx chips, and now the ability for others to design and build modchips, I doubt too much effort will be spent towards finding exploits, unless it's stumbled upon.

I have an unmodded 8.1.1 Switch Lite. It has never been connected to the internet.

if your happy to let a paperweight sit around on on older firmware, ok. Otherwise..
Why dont you just hunt for the sx lite?
You can create an emunand and use anything up to 10.2, which is the current firmware.
You can still regularly update your official firmware, & that way, arent wasting hundreds of dollars on a dust magnet.
SX OS might continue to support firmware updates possibly. Nobody really knows what the future holds.
Also unsure if atmosphere are trying to support the chips. But for the switch lite, one thing I am sure of is that those are your best options for now.

Is your Erista unit hacked?
Yes and no. I hack it then restore a clean NAND backup before going online.
What do you use the Lite for?
Right now, very little. I'd like to play certain games like Xenoblade Chronicles on it. Games which run at 720p will look better on a pixel perfect display. To get these games looking right I need to use ReverseNX and sysclk, hence the need to hack it. I don't like the feel of the original Switch in handheld mode.
And how willing are you to hack your Lite?
I have an SX Lite sitting at home. Originally my plan was to use it but now I'm reluctant because it's unclear whether SX OS will receive further support. I'm hoping to be able to run Atmosphere on it.

Atmosphere is implementing Mariko support so at one point, it will be able to used on your Switch Lite. Whether it will require the modchip or not remains to be seen.

This is probably unnecessary but I will keep it offline at least until more information is available.
