Seeing that ishopvideogame.com was recommended here, I went ahead and ordered an R4DS + 2GB Kingston micro SD card combo pack from there. It was pretty cheap so I just went for it. I hadn't a clue that R4DS's are not even made anymore. So even though this is a recommended site, will the card most likely be fake? Should I just get a refund?

If GBATemp recommended the site here, then it will most likely be real. They wouldn't advertise for a false site would they? I had never order from there so i wouldn't really know. But knowing that GBAtemp recommends it means it is real. Just my opinions.

I received this a couple of days ago and forgot to upload some pictures.
The only website on the box is http://www.rd4s.com, but I never tried the official firmware. I installed ysmenu straight away with r4ysauto and everything worked fine. I am having no problems with it as of now and hope that I won't. For around $12USD, it does what I want and seems to be a good buy for now.

Keep the faith! All good, so nice to have that to show the disbelievers. There are a few R4s in circulation!

most r4 that run original r4 software now are produced by another factory , original or not is hard to say. however you can consider r4 fake for sure all flashcard that don't run original r4 software from www.r4ds.com

A quick update:
It's been a little over a week since I received this and I've had no problems at all. I've been able to play all the games that I've wanted and haven't had any issues with wifi play either. Two different people have been using this for at least an hour or two a day. If you are looking for a cart that's cheap and will play backups with no issues, check this one out and use ysmenu. I have not tried any homebrew so I have no comments about that.

There is nothing wrong with an R4 providing you buy the right one. People shouldn't automatically turn into sheep and label everything as awful because someone else has said so or as i've read for a long time on these forms "its fake" because someone told them it was or had one bad experience and labelled it so, so naturally it snowballs and that becomes the norm.

As i cited in another thread, i've used R4's R4i's and Acekard's and never had any issues because its from a reputable dealer and i've been bothered to look into it first and ask the right questions. R4's are still available they just stopped becoming the standard when the DSi was launched, but there are still a large portion of people that are on the old DS.

The R4i-SDHC is actually the original R4, and whilst the R4i SDHC Upgrade is a clone, ironically its made by the same manufacturer, its all the other R4 fake variations you need to watch and those that have simply used the name, the likes of the "golds" "hyper" "chrismas edition" etc that use a different chipset.

Unfortunately there are alot of REALLY bad clone/fake carts out there and you just need to be careful what you purchase. In any case, its not like there is copyright on carts is there

some people just know how to code correctly and/or use quality materials/chips rather than being sloppy and looking for a quick buck.

Personally i would recommend the original R4 for the DS, the "original" R4i (DSi) or the Acekard2i, and thats based on MY experience of them because i have all three.

Finally, Clone and Fake are two different things make sure thats understood.

You mean the DSTT clone?

Everything is wrong in buying an R4, even an original one since you have to depend on the unofficial DSTT firmware if you want to play any new games.
Also most clones are not supported anymore. Some are, but who knows for how long? And ALL have terrible UIs. The R4i-SDHC I have being the worst I've seen so far.

So yeah, stop giving stupid advices.

As i stated the R4i-SDHC (Not the Upgrade) was made by the original manfacturers of the R4, the R4i-SDHC "UPGRADE" is a clone which as i said is ironically made by the same manufacurer but a clone none the less, which yes is now a copy of DSTT. You would however be hard pushed to find one of the original carts around now that much is true.

Additionally, i'm free to give what advice i please, especially when its in a thread dedicated to the R4, so if you have something constructive and helpful to provide, then feel free to add to it.

For the record, i actually prefer the old R4 menu system to that of the Acekard2i, its much easier to read and navigate, so each to their own. The only difference is that i'm not trying to force others in another direction, i'm leaving it so people can make an informed decision. It really grates when idiots seem to think that giving advice consists of "Yeah X device really sucks" without any really justification to do so.

For reference: http://gbatemp.net/index.php?showtopic=206539

To be fair, currently there alot going the same way, clones, fakes various spin offs, even Acekard are having issues, whos to say that in a years time thats all that will be available

Yes... and? What does that have to with whether your games work or not?

Informed decision based on recommendations for a dead cart and clones of it which may be dead also?

You're the one pushing these carts without anything else to back them up except "LAWL MAED BY R4 TAEM (wonder where you got that info!) NUTIN' WRON WIT THEM!!!"

Dude, get off your high horse, i offered my experience of them based on my own knowledge of the scene, whilst also agreeing with what the author said. The last time i looked this was also an R4 thread not another flash carts, and additionally that last time i also looked i never had any issues with MY R4 and all the games i needed, and still play, work just as equally well on that card as they do in my Acekard2i. There was also a small history lesson in there and what cards are out there now are all some form of spin off.

Did you read anywhere that i said you should rush out and buy one now? no you didn't, but i did say you need to be careful what you choose. If the most you can do is write derogatory comments then you don't even deserve to be on this board.

Most if not all carts will end up being a clone of something else at some point in the future, unfortunately its the way it goes and i've been around long enough to know that, we do the best we can with whats available, and for some just like the gent above he has bought an R4.

If your going to be petty about it, then its a pointless discussion.
